This win by Felix sets up a blockbuster round 2 match with Oikos.

Upset alert as Safiullin is up a set on Charlie taking the opener 6-3

Roman now up a break in set 2 - This is the worst I have seen Charlie play in quite some time, Safiullin isn't doing all that much to be honest, just getting balls back and waiting for the Alcaraz error.

Charlie is one and done as Safiullin wins it 6-3 6-4. That was no where near the level that we're used to seeing from Charlie.
Edit: Alcaraz did withdraw from Basel citing plantar fasciitis in his left foot and muscle fatigue in his lower back. Likely needs some more healing time.

Maria Sakkari has played three sets at the WTA Finals and has won a grand total of one game.
Edit: Okay, Maria has won a set, that has to feel a little better for the psyche.

I'm sure there will be highlights posted on youtube later today, but it was quite the epic match between Dimitrov and Medvedev that finished a little while ago. I heard there was a 46 or 47 shot rally on match point that Medvedev won to prolong the match. Dimitrov eventually prevailed on the 7th match point in a 3rd set tie-break.

Tsitsipas takes the opening set 6-3. Felix had a chance to break in the opening game and couldn't get it done, Stef broke a couple of games later. Pretty good set from both guys, Felix is playing well, that one break of serve was the difference.

Felix gets an early break in set 2. Let's go FAA!!
Edit: Consolidates the break.

Tsitsipas breaks Felix serving for the second set at 5-3. In the prior game, Felix had multiple break points to win set 2.
Edit: Felix puts a halt to a three game run by Oikos and guarantees himself a second set tie-break. Of course, a break of serve would be very nice.

I felt like FAA breaking at 5-2 would be important to start the third set serving.
Turns out it was important because he would tighten up and blow it after squandering his set points.

Darn, a double-fault at the worst possible team gave Oikos the cushion he needed in the second set tie-break, Realistically though, that break of serve when serving for set 2 was the killer. Give Stef credit, he really buckled down and didn't miss much in the latter part of that second set.

Felix had more winners, but also way more unforced errors than Stef today:

Quick turnaround for Felix winning Basel and then getting to Paris and playing a match yesterday and then again today. Likely a little fatigued versus a rested Stef and still brought a quite high level of tennis. Needs to rest up for the Davis Cup Finals later this month.

After an extremely strong finish to 2022, I thought Felix may actually be able to get into a grand slam final in 2023. If someone would have told me in January he would finish 2023 outside of the top 30 I would have laughed at them.

Yeah, I said at the end of 2022 that he was going to win an outdoor tourney in 2023, but that didn't happen. Oh well, I wouldn't say the old Felix is all the way back, but certainly some encouraging signs of late.

By the way, live rankings has Denis at #101 - Did not see that coming in 2023 either.

Is he still really injured or just on an extended honeymoon?

Good question - He teased up with an appearance at the Davis Cup playoffs a couple of months ago, but it was just in the role of cheerleader. You wonder if Frank asked him if he could be ready to play at the finals in November, but Milos said he was available and Denis decided to opt out. If healthy, Milos can certainly be a formidable opponent especially on indoor hard courts and with Felix looking pretty good these days, Canada has a good chance of a repeat.
/Novak is playing for Serbia though, that pretty much puts them as the favorites.
