Got this link through Nenshi's twitter. Mayoral profiles on the Sun's website. I think everyone should check this out, to at least get a basic idea of platforms / the people running.

Unfortunately, reading McIver's bio makes me like him more. Dammit!

For those that care, Ric McIver gave a great speech about his planned policies surrounding urban growth and infrastructure this evening at the Convention Centre.

Anyone at the mayors forum today? I would like more of the story, but apparently Higgins was a no show and the email from her campaign manager said something to the effect of "its none of your business" for the rationale?

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this. Something is up there though....

I was there. My memory is a bit hazy but apparently the head person organizing the forum (Brian Lee) repeatedly tried to contact Higgins (or her people) in order to get her to attend. Her people told him that she had prior engagements and when he asked the campaign manager what they were and what was more important than sharing her platform etc he said it was none of his business.

These forums are pretty informative, you get a good sense of the candidates and can be entertaining when candidates go on the attack. I encourage everyone to try and attend. Attending may not ultimately decide your vote, but it becomes real easy to decide who NOT to vote for.

Last thing, Alnoor Kassam will likely not get my vote, but he's pretty damn funny at these things.

I heard some of Alnoors lines from friend who was there. Sounded hilarious!! "Close your eyes and imagine a city where we could lower the tax rate by two percent." I also heard that Burrows was going after McIver in a big way.

I should go to some of these. At the same time most of the people there are already decided voters, and most of the questions are planted. I still think that they are really important though and I will likely attend a few over the next month or two.

Organizers say Barb Higgins declined repeated requests to attend. Instead she spent the day attending cultural events in the city. According to CTV..

More on Higgins absense from the mayoral forum....

Higgins drew further scorn in the online community after posting on Twitter during the forum that she was instead enjoying the all-day India Fest, which other candidates had also visited earlier Sunday.

Higgins said she had other gatherings to attend Sunday -- she was an emcee at Expo Latino later that afternoon -- and that she doesn't regret her decision to skip the forum.

"We made a decision today that we really wanted to stay at India Fest and meet people one on one," she said in an interview. Higgins noted she was at the two other mayoral forums earlier this month, and that there are several more planned before the vote.

Higgins' absence was notable not only because of her high-profile status, but also because she's made far fewer policy statements than most other candidates.

Higgins is aware that EMS is provincially funded right? Right?

How can anyone have decided on Higgins at this point in the game. Her platform is vague, questionable and apparently ignorant.

I'm hoping the front runners will shape up after labor day - seems most of the big name candidates are currently mailing it in.

I believe this fact was already mentioned, and laughed at, earlier in the thread. Its a glaring mistake and the fact it has been on her site and not updated for over 2 weeks is borderline hilarious.

I hope it makes it into her formal policies somehow.

Podcasting, Twitter....its' great and all for the younger generation who will most likely consider him anyway, but at the end of the day I'm not sure it matters to the massive voting block that he has to reach to get elected.....ie the one that doesn't use either of those but instead relies in a familiar face they've seen for 20 years every night, or what they read in the paper every morning.

I agree, but he's pretty aggressively fundraising with the expressed purpose of reaching people through traditional means of advertising - ie the wider constituency of less (online) engaged voters. However, thanks to his online exploits he's managed to build a substantial base of volunteers that's now working on reaching out on his behalf.

Well.. he's reached me, and I've convinced several people of his merits.

I had dinner with my parents and my dad started railing on Hawksworth and Hehr for auto-dialers, and said he'd vote for McIver over his dead body, but he wasn't sure who to vote for, but certainly didn't take Higgins seriously. So I showed him some stuff from Nenshi that I have quick access to. Two more people on the bandwagon..

Well taking advantage of new mediums definitely worked for that Obama guy, so it definitely can't hurt to try. I guess I just question how much it will matter to the older people....ie, the ones who have the time/inclination to vote. But if he can build a solid base of younger voters and actually have them speak his cause, he has a solid chance.

It may just be that I notice them more, but most of the signs I've seen on the roadsides have been for Nenshi - I don't recall seeing anything for McIver or Higgins yet. He definitely has some more traditional ways of getting his name out there as well.

Dont forget his purple building on 16th Ave near Mr Sub across from COOP. I am not a fan of the purple but it for sure stands out.

Nenshi is the biggest spammers on Facebook - he is worse than the Wire
