You're not screwed =D It was merely a suggestion.
In the beta, when I took the crafting skill + the two gatherings that supported it, I ran out of money really really quickly. Consider that it's 300 credits to send out your companion to do a treasure hunting expedition, and it adds up really fast, unless you're able to either sell it on the AH or have some other way to make credits. Then you also need enough of the archaelogy materials to level up your artificing.
You need 44k at lvl 25 to get your speeder, and keeping crafting up to where you can make worthwhile equipment while saving that much is quite the task.
I'm not saying it's not possible. For example, you could sell some of your treasure hunting resources on the AH, or reverse engineer some artificing thing until it's useful enough for people to pay credits for it (purple quality). But slicing for lockboxes is just the easiest way to generate money if you don't want to deal with selling stuff on the galactic trade market.

I took Slicing, Underworld Trading, and Cybertech as my crew skills. So far I haven't bothered crafting any items, but I don't feel like I'm missing out. Between quest rewards and random drops, my character has been fine for gear. I'm sure outfitting yourself in the finest crafted items provides a moderate stat gain, but it's not worth the monetary sacrifice, IMO. I chose Cybertech for my crafting ability because it seemed roughly equivalent to Jewelcrafting or Enchanting in WoW -- something that's not strictly needed as you level up but will be very useful at the level cap. By then, though, I'm hoping that I'll have made enough money from Slicing to just buy all the mats I need from the AH, so not having a gathering skill won't be a problem.

I don't know if something changed since beta but its 95 credits at level 10-20 to send him out and he comes back with 75-120 credits plus usually a lockbox while treasure hunting. I have sent him out about 40 times now and got about 15 green items and 5 blues.

So your one of the scum proping up a corrupt republic. I will remember this when I get the game.
You need some serious oppressing.

all the hipsters went Sith, so i had to fight for the underdog. doesn't help much in the PvP battlegrounds though, especially since it seems like the melee classes are broken for PvP like WoW was

A couple of things. I've heard that the servers that have been created during the pre-order will NOT be available for new account character creation (Basically, anyone buying after today) as of tomorrow for an "unspecified period of time". Don't know how legit that is, but if you are holding off because you aren't sure and all your buddies are playing and on a server now...you may want to be sure that you can create a character on the same server as them when you do join up.
Fun tip: When you are flying around in your space ship...hit the space bar.

I saw this tip on a loading screen before my first space battle. Aside from the novelty factor, does it actually make a difference in combat (avoiding fire or whatever) or is it just for show?

More for show than anything, but if you hit stuff you do damage your ship and/or change trajectories. If you can use it to avoid an obstacle, go ahead. I think it's mostly just for fun, though.

Wouldn't all the hipsters be going republic since it is the less "mainstream" choice?

That's how I'm running it on my iMac; there's no native OS X game client. You could try virtualization software like Parallels or VMware Fusion, but my experience has been that performance in 3d games isn't very good when using that method.

Never run any games on my mac, but this does look like a good candidate to be the first.

What is the monthly cost of this game? I was in the beta, and from the sounds of it everything has been vastly improved upon since then.

First month is included with the purchase of the game, $15/mo after that.

Here's what the server list looked like during prime time in Europe tonight:
Expect brutal login queues once US prime time rolls around this evening if the European experience is any indication.

I would expect that all through the winter break there will be long queues.
My cousin logged on at 9 this morning and had to wait.
I know they keep adding servers so that may help in placing the new arrivals over the next little while.

Adding new servers only goes so far, though. People want to play with their friends, so naturally the servers with the most people will attract even more people, so the queues snowball in size. I remember when WoW launched there were some servers with low populations while others had huge queues precisely for this reason.

free server transfers would be the next step to try and even out the populations.
I sure hope Bioware gets on that sooner rather then later

seeing queue-less servers in both the Age of Conan and Warhammer launches, and then the ghost-towns those games became only a few months after, i'll deal with the queues if it means a healthy population for TOR
