We're half way through. Can we now admit that it's never going to be anywhere as captivating as BoB or SPR? Or do I still have to keep giving it a chance? I am enjoying it somewhat, and will watch till the end, but gotta admit in the grand scheme of things, it's been underwhelming.

I still hope we get to see a good naval battle yet. I'm definitely enjoying it, and I'm understanding what soldiers went through a little bit more.
I'm definitely watching until the end as well. Is it as good as BoB? Probably not, but still a good watch.

I missed last nights episode. Show really has turned on me, for the worse. Still a good program, but IMO not a must see show like BoB.

I think Sledge has the best 'persona' of all the characters. He seems the easiest to empathize with. I can't seem to like Leckie and haven't seen enough of Basilone.
I seriously think the potential of this is way better than BoB but I think a mix of script and acting has it ranked way lower.

I agree on a couple things posted here.
Yes, that was a good episode. Yes I can accept the fact that this will never live up to BoB.
Unless the last half of the series is amazing.
But that's ok, I've enjoyed the last three episodes more than the first 2.

Finally we get the big battle! I'm totally fine with slow, character building episodes, but the way this past one started, I thought we were gonna have 3 back-to-back-to-back, which would've been ridiculous for only a 10 part war mini-series. At some point you kinda have to actually fight in a war series.
The last 15 minutes was incredible, I liked how that scene focused mainly on a guy who was seeing his first action, as it reminded me of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, when they were storming Normandy and they were all rooks and overwhelmed by the moment. That fighting was better production value than anything we saw in BoB. The last two episodes have been awesome.

I thought the battle scene in the last episode was the best I have seen since D-day on Saving Private Ryan. Very well done. It is really interesting how they are trying to portray the whole experience from the main characters point of view. From the one marine's reaction to the new guy turning down the smoke when they were about to go into battle. To the same marine giving the new guy his opened can of food.
Most people watch war movies because they want to see action, real or exaggerated. One thing that I like about this series is that they are trying to portray what it was really like to be in these guys shoes at this moment in time. I know that that is extremely difficult to do. This series does seem to give me somewhat of an idea what these men must have gone through, mentally and physically.
When BOB was originally airing on HBO back in 2002. I was watching an episode (the one where they are in fox holes in the forest in the winter and keep getting shelled) with my grandpa who served in Normandy. He was pretty critical of the whole thing. I told him that they probably had to shoot it that way so it would translate to the tv audience. For instance showing guys sitting in the pitch dark not saying a word would be pretty boring tv. He agreed somewhat, but I could tell he thought the whole episode was garbage. In comparison, he liked Saving Private Ryan. He told me the look of the battle damaged towns in France looked very realistic in the movie.

I have to strongly disconcur, think of any of the battle scenes in BoB and they are miles above The Pacific.
I just watched "Carentan" last week, and oh god its so much better.
BoB as a whole has actual battle scenes and strategy. Not just drama for 45 mins with 10 mins of a machine guns firing mowing down Japs.

To be fair, this last fight scene wasn't them just sitting in a hole firing their machine guns. It is almost exactly like the Saving Private Ryan scene. Followed one guy for the most part (Sledge), had him go deaf, stormed the beach, broke through, went to flank. Almost textbook SVR scene.
I thought it was a good scene. The series as a whole though has really dropped compared to BoB. Oh well, still a good show.

I thought the first 6-7 episodes of BoB were excellent, and the last couple dragged a bit.
The Pacific has started slowly but is definitely making improvements with every episode.
Hopefully this trend continues and we can all look back and say " wow that was one hell of a miniseries"

I think Leckie is a good character. I empathize with him a bit, and I can totally come to understand characters like him in the 1930's/40's. Not everyone was a made for film charismatic soldier.
Wasn't Leckie one of the original authors of the series as well? I'm kind of anticipating a sad twist of fate in his role over the next few episodes.

Gory episode tonight. Most dismembered limbs I've ever seen I think. Won't say any spoilers for all of you on the western feed.

Pretty good episode I thought, my gripe with the series is, why are the episodes so short? This one didn't even touch 50 minutes long. I want more!
Next episode will be Peileliu as well, so I am thinking this series won't slow down like BoB did. Because they will still go over Iwo Jima which could be 2 episodes long, and with 4 left (1 for Peileliu, say 2 for Iwo Jima), looks like a lot more action.

Loved tonights episode. The guys joking around with "sledgehammer" definitely had a BoB-like feel to it. And the fight scenes were great. Very gory.
The pacific continues to improve.

It's not even that long. The intro/credits at the beginning take an unusually long time, so by the time there's actually a scene, you're 6-7 minutes into the hour.

I could not believe that Leckie was ordered to go back across the airfield to find communications and bring it back. I know that communication is important on the battlefield. But it seemed like a miracle that you would make it to that point across the airfield. Then to be expected to run across that airfield two more times seems virtually impossible. Which it was. I wonder if Leckie's time in the Pacific theater is over?
