As for Avatar, I never got into the hype, didn't even realize it was released until maybe a day after as people started to tell me how good it was. I watched it, yeah it was good maybe not deserving of all the praise it's getting but the visuals were amazing and made it worth the price of admission, well in comparission to other movies. I went with a couple people who would normally hate the Scifi type movies like this but they quite enjoyed it.
Same here. I went on the 27th with my wife and a few friends. My wife HATES scifi. But to my suprise she LOVED Avatar. With the way that it ended, do you think there will be a sequel? With the amount of money they have made so far, it would seem likely IMO.

Cameron has stated that he wants to continue the Avatar universe by doing stories on the other planets around Pandora

Oh yeah, not that it adds much to the discussion at all, but the best part of the movie was a little kid in front of my reaching out to grab one of the flower thingies as they "approached" us. It was just really cute to see.

First movie I've seen in a long time that I wanted to immediately see it again when the credits rolled.

I think I'll go again in a week or 2.

That's really funny that you'd say that. Things far away look flat normally, but in movies they can use separation greater than your eyes to make big, far objects appear more three-dimensional (called hyperstereo). Pretty sure Cameron used a variable (automatic) stereo separation, so you would have experienced hyperstereo watching Avatar.

The only difference seeing Avatar at an Imax theatre is it is on a a bigger screen. They did not use Imax cameras to shoot the movie. The sound may also be a bit better as Imax theatres have better sound systems.

Oh man, I just watched District 9 on Blu-Ray.

Puts Avatar to shame, I'm sorry. District 9 is just a better movie in every sense.

James Cameron got beat by a first timer with 1/10th the budget

I was going to argue with this post but clearly there is no point.

Actually I just watched District 9 again. And while it was good, I didn't enjoy as much as when I saw it in the theatre.

I just don't understand how another movie could be made though with the ending it had. Doesn't the message stay poignant enough with this one film?

it's doubtful the 2nd movie will have anything to do with the blue cat people. Cameron stated he wants to do other stories on the planets around Pandora

Go for it.

In what way is Avatar better? Story? NO. Character Development? Not a chance. Action? Nope.

The only thing it has to it's advantage is visuals. Which it should considering its got 10 times the budget.

I absolutely loved District 9.

I can't explain it, but I liked Avatar a LOT more. There aren't very many movies that I have wanted to watch again immediately after the credits rolled, but Avatar is one those movies.

How did I hate it so much then?

I usually fall pretty much in line with the mass opinion when it comes to movies but I thought Avatar was terrible. I didn't like a single thing about it. I thought the story was childish and cheesy, the action was boring and predictable and felt that they cut corners, I thought the 3D was more irritating then entertaining and I just felt it was something that Pixar would make and not James Cameron.

Not even in my top 5 of the year in overall movies.
