I guess it depends on how relevant you think that is for completely different players with completely different coaching staffs.
You can also evaluate if the Flames simply had better PP players at that time.
- During Gio's rookie season they had Hamrlik and Dion. Would you have played Gio over either?
- During Brodie's season they had Gio and Bouw, though I also recall (with some level of horror) that perhaps The Anton was also getting time on PP.
- During Rasmus's rookie season they had Hanifin, Brodie and Gio. This was during Gio's 74 point season so he was the clear first choice.
Phaneuf was probably the closest comparable to a guy entering the league ready to have an immediate PP impact. Was 5 minutes too low? Not sure.
I would suggest that most of those guys didn't get PP time because they weren't better than the incumbents. I don't think that's the same situation as what we are dealing with here.
All that to say, I find things that happened 15-20 years ago to not really be that relevant.
