All things being equal on the ice, it's a better contract for deal with.
So I'd take the gamble.

Signed a big guaranteed contract for his and his families lifetime retirement. Isn’t having the same results. Not the first guy to do it.
Also criticism years ago was he was small and physically wouldn’t be able to fulfill a career in the NHL with big hits. Others thought he avoided all the big hits. Nothing has changed.
This is where the NFL is different. Don’t perform and you get cut. Huge contracts but it’s not all guaranteed.

The only alternative - to which players would NEVER agree - is to hand out only short-to-medium term contracts...say 1-4 years. More than that? Just say no.

Would Huberdeau at 4x10.5 be any less of a wasted asset on the ice?
Might as well never sign anyone when talent can evaporate for no reason. This Huberdeau dropoff is completely inexplicable. 100+ years of NHL history and this is the first guy that goes from top 2 scorer to replacement level in 90 games.

If the owners would all get on board it wouldn't matter what the players wanted but that will never happen.

Huberdeau is a turn over machine with terrible defensive awareness. He also has zero grit to his game. He seems like a very one dimensional player and the one dimension has somehow disappeared.

How about they both cost games?

The fact that anyone is even discussing Huberdeau vs Nurse makes it clear just how bad Huberdeau is. That's a comparison that should never apply to you as an NHL'r.

Gaudreau is -37 in 95 games in Columbus...its not just his offensive game that has dropped off either

I'm sure this would have to be addressed in any trade with salary retention and probably a pick on the Flames end

As long as the owners didn't mind sitting out a year or more.
But you are correct, all of the owners won't get aboard with it, as the richest teams like having it the way it is as it gives them an advantage.

The owners wouldn't be sitting out, high profile UFA's would. There would still be plenty of players taking 4 year deals, the league wouldn't shut down just because a handful of free agents don't get long term deals. The problem is some idiot like Katz would break away and extend Draisaitl for 8 years and it would all fall apart. Owners will always stab eachother in the back to get an edge.

No...but it would be for a considerably shorter handicapping period of time.

The writing was on the wall for Gaudreau when he decided to go to a terrible team that didn't offer a bucket load of money (i.e. an offer he couldn't refuse). It would be one thing to pick Columbus if they were offer 11.5 million (lol) but if you just pick a bad team in a market where barely anyone pays attention to the team - you just want to spend your years making money in peace. No pressure to win, barely any media attention, no pressure from a huge contract.
I respect the lack of hustle involved.

people were called out for saying this when it happened but it's obviously what he wanted...many said he was all jealous of Tkachuk and made a terrible mistake last season but I don't see it.
Tkachuk was getting murdered in the finals and unable to put on a shirt by himself with multiple injuries.
Gaudreau had been at the lake house for two months while making more money for less work
Its not a bad gig lol
I think Gaudreau is fine with his terrible play...like Evel Knievel he gets paid for the attempt

Tonight’s stat line for Johnny: 0 pts, team worst -2, 19:20 game time, officially surpassed by Gudbranson in points on the season.

Huberdeau also with an atrocious game. I just want this swap to go down. I used to like Gaudreau but I have never liked Huberdeau.

Gudbranson now has more points than Gaudreau.
So does Huberdeau, for what it's worth.

Johnny is the true hero for not robbing Calgary
He knew he was going to check out on his retirement contract
Huberdeau is doing the same thing here. Too bad wizard was too dumb to recognize that or maybe he did but he didn’t care
