Byram is really good, but the only way I'd want him on the team is if he was allowed to wear a no contact jersey for games.

Players may come.
Players may go.
But we’ll always have the Saddledome and opaque plans for its replacement.

I agree they should be worth a first easily.
But at the end of the day, Conroy needs to move these players at some stage and needs the take the best deal available.
There may be a limited supply of teams willing to move 2023 first round picks, for obvious reasons.
I don’t think anyone tpreally knows the answer to these questions, but we’ll shortly find out.

I hope they use this as an opportunity to actually rebuild and build a true contender but part of me just knows they're going to half ass it and get half ass results as always. I'd love to think Conroy will bring a new approach to the organization but he's probably there to continue ownerships approach. Guess we will find out soon enough.

Freidman Johnston and Steinberg all have said Lindholm is still open to staying the only one who is saying otherwise is TMZ Frank.
Frank is has been embarrassed this week with claims of Brodie being bought out and having to walk it back.
Dreger Freidman Marek and Steinberg all have the other 3 not wanting to sign.
Those guys also had Huska as our top candidate while Frank had Mitch Love as the coach.

Steinberg openly said he’s not optimistic about Lindholm re-signing, but that the door isn’t closed and then followed it up as saying this news regarding the other players could impact Lindholm’s desire to stay.
Friedman said they were negotiating and that Lindholm didn’t want a rebuild.

Trying for an expedited 3-4 year rebuild with Lindholm anchoring that top line sounds good to me.
Very good chance he's still good then.
Deal the rest including Tanev for assets.

I’m fine with Lindholm too as long as the $’s don’t start with 9. 8x8.5 is the max for me. And even that is pushing it with the extra year.

I wonder how Huberdeau, Kadri, and Weegar are feeling about Treliving and the team at this point. They certainly got paid, but were probably sold by Tre on the idea of a winner. Less than a year later team is looking more like the OceanGate Flames and they'll be riding out the last good years of their careers going through a rebuild on a prarie province team playing in an ancient arena with a critical Canadian fanbase.

Give me OceanGate Flames all day long.
Phillips, Coronato, Pelletier, Zary on top 9 roles full time? I'll take it.
Can't imagine Huby and Kadri are enjoying this though, no.

I'd like to see 2 of these guys moved at the draft. Not sure how likely that is but it doesn't make sense to keep them if you can't extend them.
Problem is, other teams know this so maybe the offers aren't great.

Anything involving a '23 first can be greenlit.
Hard to say how many team would be offering theirs though, with a specific prospect or two they likely have their sights set on.

All 4 guys are not extending right now that is for sure. If the Flames do something dumb and offer Lindy $10M he might not be able to turn that down but it would be a massive mistake.
I think we could see one moved in more of a hockey deal but I assume the Flames would be getting younger. I could also see a situation where the Flames get a bunch of futures but turn around and move some of those to get a Konecny or Schiefele. We will see if it is a full rebuild or a retool and really try and be competitive next year.

While the other have said he's still negotiating and one said he hasn't closed the door.
Maybe he wants to see what the return is on some of these players.
If he is hoping for a bunch of vets coming back he can leave as well.
We have been presented with an amazing opportunity to cash in on career years of 2 players and a player in his prime in an important role. Picks and prospects ready to play will be huge for this organization in dire need of youth injection.
We will also open up a lot of cap room which we can now use to facilitate deals to take on a bad contract with some assets our way like Montreal did last season.
It's really not doomsday.

Well, Hubby and Kadri only need to look at themselves in the mirror, as they are at least partially responsible for last year.
In any event, they were swayed by the money.

If Lindholm re-signs basis a pitch for no rebuild then the Flaems are going to trade the UFAs in re-tool trades

Yeah I think it’s actually the exact opposite. This is the best case scenario.
The team as it was constructed was not a Championship quality team, so doubling down on some of these key parts as they age and get more expensive would have been the worst case scenario in my eyes. It would have shown a tragic lack of patience and big-picture view for the organization.
I’m happy and optimistic (…assuming the returns are future-oriented). Yeah it sucks that we’ve seen so many people openly bail on this organization, but it really just shows how poorly things have gone - and they have gone poorly. Players look and see the lack of direction and lack of progression.
The Flames are entering a new era with frontmen in Conroy and Iginla. I think letting them build it from scratch (or close to scratch) is the best case.

This isn't shocking news.
If I was a player - even if I liked the Calgary and wanted to stay - why would I sign a year before my contract was up and a year before the cap goes way up.
Outside of Toffoli reporting - there is mainly just reporting about guys not wanting to sign extensions vs them wanting out.
It would be easier to get players to commit if the cap wasn't flat this year and then likely going way up next year.
