Just such a shame. I really think Tre has done everything he can to ice a competitive team every year. I do have to wonder if ownership is realllt committed to building a positive winning culture. Players value things like arena, facilities, media relations, endorsements. I think ownership needs to take responsibility for these.

Backlund's follow up answer said "biggest dream of all would be to win it here in Calgary. I would love to do it here in Calgary", but people are quick to forget that one for some reason.

He's being non committal right now because he wants to see what changes are coming. I would be too if I were in his shoes.

That doesn't mean he or Lindholm don't want to be back. Just means they want to see what happens first in this very important and complicated offseason.

From what I saw today, I'm not even close to ruling out Backlund returning beyond next season.

Just heard Lindholm and Backlund’s media presser and man, it doesn’t sound like these guys would be too thrilled to re-sign this summer. This organization has to absolutely explore trading these 2 if they can’t extend them. Mikael and Elias absolutely drive this team especially on the PK and I can’t imagine this team being even remotely competitive with out Backs. He was the team’s MVP this season in my opinion.

I think this team could get a great bunch of futures and assets for the both of them and could kick start a rebuild/retool. Deep down I’m obviously rooting for a torch it to the ground rebuild though as retooling and building a core with Kadri/Huberdeau scares me. Markstrom can stay though as he probably makes the team worse. If he continues to give the team .890 sv%, then the team should get plenty of top picks for years.

Have to say I respect Backlund so much for being forthright. It's kind of like beast-mode Backs, he just wants to win. And if he's up front and they team knows where he's at I have no problem. You can see he's just passionate about the game, even though he really has appreciated his time here.
