Is it even an improvement? Now after both teams score TDs, the coin flip winner can with a field goal. I think it gives a bigger advantage to coin flip winner in a high scoring game with tired defenses.

I think that rule change is a mistake.
The team who gets the second possession can play 4 down football the entire length of the field. Seems like an advantage to me.

I think that it's a mistake as well. They have seen what works with College and need to look at tweaking that to fit the NFL, but that makes the most sense as it gives both teams both sides of the ball. Full team needed to win

When it comes to playoff OT instead of trying to find some new rules or format of play they might as well just do an extra 15 minute quarter. Play it out by adding as many quarters as necessary until there is a winner.

There's no way to avoid that in any OT scenario. Even with the CFL/college OT rules of possession from the 35 yard line the team with the last possession will always have the advantage of knowing what they need to score to remain tied so they have 3 (or 4) downs to get a TD if necessary. A coin flip is always going to provide a bit of an advantage but in this new format it will be less of an advantage.

Would you receive then if you won the toss?
I would not, I want the ball, 3rd possession.

It depends on the type of game I guess. If it is a shoot out and the defenses are spent, then the ball and 3rd possession are a huge advantage. A 3-3 defensive struggle, then getting the ball second might be considered, but still the chance at an extra possession is too much of an advantage to pass up.

If you receive first then the only way you are guaranteed a second possession is if you go for two and get it. The team who gets the ball second has two new advantages because of this change: the advantage of knowing the score needed and thus using all four downs to their full advantage; and, unless the team who gets the ball first goes for two, they can end the game by going for two. The team who gets the ball first can no longer end the game.
Personally would have preferred the "score 8" option, makes things far more interesting strategically.

The NFL just does not want the team getting the ball first ending the game.

The college format (before last year’s stupid rule change) is the best. I don’t see The problem. Everyone gets a shot, it’s “real” football, it’s not a gimmick, perfect. Start teams at the 35 if you want and have at it.

I agree, but the suits think it drags the game too long for television, and the the safety of the players.

Brady unretires and suddenly Arians just happens to retire. Couldn't be related, must be totally independent of each other.

On a related note....how long until AB is back? Lol.

It will be interesting to see what team is desperate enough to bring in AB. I absolutely think he will play again because GM's with jobs on the line will take the risk.

GB is going to be pretty desperate but I doubt they would be crazy enough to call up Brown.

Bobby Wagner to the Rams. 5 years, $50 million, which could be worth up to $65 million, as reported by Adam Schefter.
Every big-name player that becomes available, I'm just going to assume going forward they're going to the Rams..

Don't get this from the Saints perspective. That first next year could end up in the top 10. And getting an extra first this year doesn't mean much right now when you have no idea what the draft board will look like. Only way this kinda makes sense for the Saints is if they are gonna use this years two firsts to move up for Willis or whatever.

Yeah I just learned about this trade and am still trying to get my head around it. My first thought is I'm not really on board with what the Saints sacrificed in next year's draft. With 2 picks in the first 19 this year, I feel like they're going to try to make a move again this draft, they clearly really like someone.
All these years I thought Payton was behind all the Saints aggressive draft moves. But first draft post-Payton and here we go again. Hmmm..
EDIT: Actually speaking of Payton, if he does return to coaching as many believe, if he could go ahead and do that in 2023 so the Saints could recoup that 2023 1st round pick, that'd be greaaaat. Perhaps that was factored into this?

From a pure value perspective (if you go by the value chart), this is a win for Loomis, as they picked up the equivalent of a mid-second round pick in value.
That said, if that 1st ends up being in the top-10 next year, it'll look pretty bad.
