Things getting more tense. My wife is hearing gunshots from a distance in her village. Yelling outside. Some ground troops have been spotted. The bridge to Kharkov from their village has been destroyed. Her and her family are sleeping in their jackets with their bags beside them just in case. #### this stupid bull####.
Wishing you the best man. This is ####ed.
You still have communication with them? Are they able to get out?

Huntingwhale, I am really sorry to hear about your wife. I can't even begin to wrap my head around what you are feeling and dealing with right now.
I hope turn out ok for your wife and her family.

I hope this is a wake up call for the West. We continue to do business with Russia and China, two nations with horrendous Human Rights records.
It would be nice to see the West wean ourselves off these type of countries.
The Baltics and Poland have the economic strength to purchase significant quantities of Western arms (which they have been doing for some time). Poland just recently purchased F-35 fighters and M1A2 Abram tanks from the Americans. Those countries are far, far, far more capable of defending themselves than Ukraine.

I am so sorry, man. Can't imagine what you are going through. Words cannot assuage or comfort in moments like these.

Communications are still on, for now. Seems to go on and off. They tried to get out earlier this morning but there are check stops as soon as they tried to leave. Hopefully they will try again when safe, but not sure where they can go tbh.

If only Ukraine kept their nukes. This is just a bad story for proliferation.
There will be no world war. Putin knows the game and will take what he knows he can get. Meaning no NATO states. He’d get his ass handed to him and likely lose what he gained.
Also no one is firing nukes MAD is still a very real thing. As powerful as he is, his army wil shoot him if he tries that.
They take Ukraine and Belarus and I don’t think he goes further TBH.

How do you feel about Trump's comments about, and support for, Putin this week?
I think Trump is a moron on significant levels but I still don't think that the UN or the global community has really done anything of significance with regarding to this.
We know that this was Putin's goal and he was going to do this, how the global community responded was going to be important here. Pleading at the UN to avoid this and for a million other causes that really haven't helped anybody. It's a more feel good moment and a great way for certain people to get their greasy paws onto things that probably benefit them.
Like I said, Trump is a moron but I don't think the UN sending the Ukrainian's $20 million is exactly doing anything to move the needle. A major European country is under a full scale attack and it's going to be a disaster until significant action is taken.

They are also NATO members. So if the US/NATO doesn't get involved then, it will be really calling their bluff.

Sorry I wasn't clear.
I think the West should be economically aligning themselves with like minded countries.
For example, our heavy reliance on China is ridiculous, it enables and emboldens their actions.

Can you at least say who these people are your tweeting? Would save me from having to click on the profile and seeing if its someone from a loonie tunes 'media' company. Kudos to this guy to working for at 2 of them in his career though.
Yoho shares tweets from Corey Morgan, I think you can assume all his sources are bull#### propaganda, and scroll past them.

Japan and South Korea have the right strategy for this and have established funds for their domestic companies to divest their Chinese interests. Samsung heavy industries closing a shipyard they ran for decades, Samsung electronics closing its last TV manufacturing plant in China, Panasonic, Toshiba and others have already bitten. Canada, US, and Europe should seriously look at doing the same.

Does any of this put Belarus in a awkward position? Ukraine couldn't/shouldn't attack a Russian city (even as a guerrilla action) because the support of Russian people is a greater weapon against Putin, but Belarus has aligned themselves in such a way that they can be made a representative of the effect of war on both sides. Do they suffer an attack at some point here? They are not bystanders.

The reason this is happening is because dictators know the west has neutered itself over the last 3 to 4 years.
Taiwan is next would be my guess.
We are bought by Russia and China. Globalism!
The hook was they they would become ecapitalist. When Xi was elected President he's an economist, he's going to reform China. He's going to reform China alright. Wow was the west duped.

Cosmin "reports" for True North, for anyone that isn't aware (I only quoted Pete to state what is probably the obvious, but anyway). They're...well, you can imagine - Andrew Lawton, Sue Ann Levy, Candice Malcolm, Anthony Furey, etc. - perhaps a mildly more "professional" unit than the Rebel.

Take the Trump comment out of the post and think logically. A huge portion of European energy comes from Russia and from Ukraine, wither Putin ends up controlling Ukraine or ends up significant self interest in the country. When you hold the energy hammer over 500 million people and the worlds 3rd largest economy, that's an issue that needs to be dealt with. There isn't a switch that can be flipped to magically deal with that.
Enough reports are coming out that cyber attacks have had a massive affect on Ukraine's ability to defend themselves in this, if we aren't going to send boots on the ground, can we at least provide them with the best level of support across the board?
Ukraine and the EU/NATO have been in positive talks regarding membership, how is that going to continue now?
On a more serious note, if Putin continues to go after other states or at least inflicts additional pain in other countries, what are we going to do other than sit around and worry about the optics at the UN?
I get it, a lot of people don't like Trump cause he's a moron and a mentally sick individual and caused a lot of damage to the world community. Does it matter that we have a more cunning, smarter, sicker and more dangerous murderer doing the same thing and even worse to the global community today? This going to have a significant affect on billions of people today, can we have a proper response from the worlds powers?
I get a feeling people here are massively underestimating the impact this has had on the atmosphere in the large part of Europe that's bordering Russia.
The opening salvo in public opinion has been stuff like "nationalize all Russian assets" and "deport all Russians". That's just day 1 stuff, and it's going to get a lot uglier, especially in places with a more recent grievances than what Finland has. I grieve for Russian civilians, it's going to be hard. They don't deserve it, but many see them as a danger to us, potentially rising up for Russia within our own country like they did in Ukraine, or used as an excuse for attack.
The popular view is that Ukraine is just first to get attacked, if Putin is not stopped, and possibly even if Putin is replaced. Not trusting Russia is the natural state for much of Europe anyway, it's generational memory. So many countries have national heroes who fought Russia and libraries full of art about how awful it was under Russian rule.
There might have been a gap in this experience with a generation or two growing up without that constant fear, a hope that we might have entered a new more civilized era, but the idea has always been somewhere in the back of our heads, that discomfort in hearing that ####ing anthem. Now it's out again, and frankly the hate comes as easy as breathing.
Every Russian is suspect, every asset is questionable, today and tomorrow, no matter what happens in Ukraine. We forgot that for a second, we won't again in a generation. We might not want to fight that enemy, there might be times when we even co-operate, but they will remain our enemy, even in peacetime, even if we smile politely.
Helping Ukraine is not a matter of solidarity, it's plain self interest. Every Russian soldier that dies in Ukraine is one less to threaten everyone else later.
There's just no coming back from this, not unless Russians topple Putin, and even then we would be extremely suspicious of the next guy, and the next.
Because we have been reminded of what has always been true.
"We stand accusing at the dawn of time,
Ukraine, Poland, Finland and Estonia,
the same fire burns through Latvia and Lithuania.
We share a common flag and a curse
we demand an end to brutality!
No matter the guile and manner,
Moscow will betray you, has betrayed before
and will betray for a thousand years."
That's a quick translation from our national poet, Eino Leino. Written in 1914.
That's just the truth.
