lol. “We don’t want to come play with you” “Well you’re not invited anyways!”
I think this leans more towards a deal the nhl struck with the ioc so that certain players don’t have the option to leave and play anyways. Just removes any headache with players still wanting to go even though they’ve been told they can’t.

I dont really care either but I also really dont feel bad for the players.
I think the romanticized 'idea' of playing in the Olympics is very different than the reality with which we're being presented.
Its one thing to travel to exotic locations with your buddies and your family to compete in a great tournament and have a really good shot at winning and have a great time, enjoy the Olympic atmosphere, etc.
But this is not that. At all. Not even close and I'd hope that the players would understand that.
Frankly...it seems like this Olympics for hockey players would be a grim and miserable affair.
I’ve seen Cool Runnings multiple times so know for a fact that you’re wrong.

I’m glad NHLers aren’t going to the Olympics because presumably the League will use the time to catch up with the schedule.
It’s a stupid idea to send all the best players in the world in the middle of a global pandemic.
Also, it’ll give us something to watch while the Olympics are on, because there is no way in hell I’m watching 2+ weeks of China Communist Party propaganda.
What would be great is if Canada and the US decide to not send hockey teams at all. A great way of boycotting the games without any cost to ‘athletes that have been working towards this all their lives’.

and he is trying to equate an agreement that deals with the revenues of the league, with his desire for an agreement that lets him get out of his contract for a while, so he can go to the Olympics.
Over the past couple years of this pandemic, witnessing athletes across all sports attempt to think for themselves has just been a sad thing to behold.
He’s proposing that the NHL continues play while the best players in the league head over to the Olympics?
I think in some European leagues, it isn't uncommon for club teams to release players to play in national team tournaments and still keep playing their regular season games. It's not a completely absurd idea. I think in those leagues, players negotiate it that into the contracts with their club teams before signing though, so it isn't a CBA issue.
I wonder if NHL players start going that route when they negotiate contracts. I am not sure if that is possible in the NHL though. I think we will see fewer players want to commit themselves to the Olympics though if they have to give up some salary.

I'm sure it's been discussed, but how exactly are they expecting the Olympics to go off with China's strict quarantining rules? Would be a complete miracle for no one to being covid into the Olympic village. Once it's there it will spread like mad unless they keep everyone in their own individual air tight pod.
When the NHL originally went to the olympics to try to grow the games, it was a great idea. And was fun to watch over two decades.
But the NHL has gotta figure out a way to get out of the Olympics in the long term since I don't believe they get any benefit from it anymore, and it's purely for the players. It's too disruptive to the league, and the fact IOC wouldn't allow the NHL to have media content rights is BS for the NHL.
It may take a decade or two, but if the NHL can consistently have the World Cup of Hockey happen every four years, and make the tournament build integrity as the best international hockey competition, they may be able to finally be able to shackle off the Olympic chains if they're still interested in doing so at that point.

Yeah, I think the idea of the Olympics as they’re currently constructed is as an absolute joke and is a net negative on mankind.
Have a World Cup of Hockey every 4 years, in the off-season, and have it rotate around the world in countries where the facilities already exist.
The IOC and Chinese Government are both an absolute blight on mankind, so I was already not going to watch the games.
…Brad Marchand’s comments also show how committed to winning a Stanley Cup he is, as two weeks (possibly 5) without your best players, especially for a shallow team like Boston could absolutely sewer your season/opportunity to make the playoffs. It’s also a giant slap in the face to Bruins fans.
^^ The Bruins were without both Marchand and Bergeron due to COVID and went on a losing streak. Pretty selfish for Marchand to want more of that.
It’s such a weird desire anyway. they don’t even stay in the Olympic village typically (and for sure wouldn’t this time). And they don’t take part in opening or closing ceremonies as a rule.
