I don't think this trade is that bad. They off loaded 2 bad deals and 1 horrendous deal and picked up two guys that should play and help them. 9th OA is a pretty big question mark.
What we have here is the Turboencabuator of trades. One of the guys who built it can't even understand it, and the more people try to explain, the more it sounds like this:

This is pretty much the quality of analysis you get from the guy these days.

If OEL played as well as Edler did in his 30s they'd be overjoyed. No reason to expect him to.

To be fair, Tanev is actually the optimistic hope for the Canucks. Everything suggested he was going the same way OEL was - wrong side of 30, coming off a few bad years where he was hampering his partner's numbers, and trending down. Then he gets a change of scenery and turns everything around instantly and becomes a success story.
Of course, the rebuttal to that story is that OEL is going to the scenery that Tanev came from and saw his game going the wrong way, so...

I mean, it's not like the Canucks are in a position to succeed in the next 2 years either. Benning himself said it'd take 2 years before the Canucks were "real competitive".
Nope, that was my view before the trade rumours started.
I mean, if he doesn't end up getting traded, I won't change my tune (unless he plays badly again next season). I honestly think they should keep him because his value is likely to go up between now and the trade deadline. But it's hard to see how they fit everyone under the cap without trading someone else.
Fair enough, I might have you confused with some else. Also let’s be careful with what we say about Edler, my gut says he signs here next week
