Välimäki assisted Ilves' game winning goal (6-5). Great pass to Suomi splitting the defence, and Suomi one-timed GWG easily.

E: Juuso ended up with 0+2 (that goal has been changed to a primary assist).

Based on what I've seen from Tampere this season, Eemeli Suomi is a stud and I think he'll be generating NHL interest here pretty soon.

Such an exciting prospect.

Haven’t been this excited about a Flames prospect since Johnny at the world juniors

What makes him so exciting is that there really isn’t a weakness to his game. He seems to have ice in his veins, even playing in the NHL in the playoffs as a 20 year old. Just zero panic in all situations

He has all the tools and a pretty damn good toolbox too. And on top of that, he has poise, and that's hard to find in young developing defenders.

What's most amazing is how much damage he does at 5 on 5.

https://twitter.com/user/status/1329850205202771970

just casually goes end to end, generates a good shot on goal, and centres from behind the net for another good shot

Woah woah..........I really like him a lot, but let's slow down with the Norris talk. There are a lot of great young d-men already in the league. He's got a ways to go.

Ya... he’s not even the best dman from his country from his draft year so any talk of this is insanely premature

With 17 pts in 16 games, Val is the highest scoring D man in the liiga. His next closest comparable (by my search) has 14 pts. Ville Heinola, who’s a pretty highly touted prospect for the Jets, has 10 pts.

Next jersey will be a Home retro Valimaki.

God it’s nice to want to buy a home jersey for the first time being a fan at 34 years old.

My biggest concern is his adjustment back to small ice. Yes he was great in the whl on smal ice but he's gotta get that game back. Is je as good as he is vs men on larger ice or goes he suffer from coming from bigger ice back to smaller ice like we see with alot of khl/ european players?

While Liiga teams use different rink sizes (190-197ft × 92-98ft), Valimaki's team, Ilves, plays as close to NHL rink size (200ft + 85ft) as any team in the league (197ft × 92ft).

While it'll be a little adjustment, it's not all that drastic

In his rookie year as a pro, which was also his D+2 year, he put up 14pts in 20 games in the AHL-pretty dazzling numbers for a 20 year old. I think he's comfortable on smaller ice.

On the flip side of this comparable game: Arizona gave Vili Saarijarvi a 23 year old 3 year AHL veteran (3rd round pick of Detroit) a qualifying offer which looks as though he hasn't signed.

He has 5 goals and 13 pts playing in 13 games +12 playing 20:59 as a RD ( shoots Right)

I haven't seen any reports or expectations that based on his top play in Liiga he will even be given much of a chance to finally get into the NHL.

There might not be a direct translation of the play in Liiga to NHL success.

We've been saying for pages that the Liiga is just above the AHL and not by much. His point production in Liiga will not translate into a point per game defenseman at the NHL level, and we all know that.

His current production points to a 39 point NHL season given the averages in NHLe.

I'd maybe give Valimaki a bit of a boost because of how quickly he's adjusting to a league just above the AHL level after missing a year of hockey, but it still a 35-40 point comparable.

No controversy here.
