Everything new thats been designed around the Flames has unilaterally stunk for years.
Best thing they've done over a decade is revert to an old design.
Magbe *they* don't like them, but pedestals and white Cs beat the hell out of what they've been pumping out, which hasn't even been much.
The designers should view the merch similarly to the majority of the fanbase since that's who they're hoping to appeal to. People like the late 90s styles, many like blasty, and many especially like the 03-07 home iteration.
And the best the team could do is shuffle the flag monstrosities to the thirds rather than resurrect something people actually like. Yeah okay King, but we've already had 13 years of his patches/legacy. Thats enough.
I just see making them the thirds as really lazy. Thats not what an alternate is generally supposed to be. Maybe in 15-20 years its more appropriate because then it's actually a throwback.
Anyways, grats to them on making the easiest and most obvious decision of all time in regards to Flames jerseys.
People? Many? I dunno, I think fans of a certain age may be found of them, but I think most of them are poorly done ugly designs. If you have any surveys that show more than a few people liking them, I'd be interested to see it.

This is about what I suspect. Pedestal at the bottom, followed by Blasty, wordmark, retro's rated best. I don't know who these "people" are you refer to, but you should stop hanging out with them. Their opinions are wrong.
For everyone who keeps complaining about the 3rd still being the old home jersey..
We will likely have 2 new alternate jerseys within the next year or two as I’ve heard plans on every team having a 4th jersey and I expect come next season a new 3rd will be introduced.
In a year the set from the last 13 years will be gone and we will have a clean slate for some new designs and will have some of the most beautiful jerseys in any sporting league as our regulars.
Anything is better than the wordmark western shoulder abomination. They should hold a bonfire public burning of those in the saddledome parking lot for everyone to see the evil be cleansed from the earth for good.

My mom has bought me 2 Flames jerseys in my life: the wordmark and the first heritage classic.
I’m completely in the minority here but I really don’t like the retro jerseys to be the full time jerseys. It’s lazy and lacks creativity. Keep the 80s in the 80s. I don’t mind them being brought in as an occasional jersey but to bring them back full time? Naa. What’s so great about anything done in that era, design wise? SMH.

Now that I've heard that the flag jerseys are staying around as the third jersey, I'm half expecting to hear that there's going to be 35 "third jersey" games at home next season.

Meh, keep the fanbase happy. It's been asked for for years, and every time they've done something else people have been disappointed.
I predict:
2020/2021 - either during the season, or in the following off-season, we see new 3rds. This depends on when we get arena attendance back to 100% to try to boost hype & sales, so could slide to the following year?
2022/2023 - maybe a new "4th" to keep jersey sales up across the league?
2024/2025 - the Adidas contract is up, everyone gets new home/away jerseys again, moving the retros back to 3rds, etc.

Technically the jersey was designed in the 70s. And I dunno, what's so great about jerseys that teams wore in the 70s and 80s? Ask Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Montreal, NYR, NYI, etc.
Classics never go out of style.

It's a timeless design. It's clean, highlights one of the greatest logos in sports without cluttering it all up with unnecessary colours(black, ahem) and striping, and looks fantastic on the ice.

I did have a feeling the Flames would screw something up and of course they did. Not happy they are keeping the ugly piping and flags as a 3rd. The Ken King angle is such a cop out. Plenty of other ways to honour his legacy without doubling down on a bad design.

The Flames could copy the Arizona Diamondbacks and have a new jersey every single game. These should appease everyone, including those of us that want to see Bootskate.

Put me in the camp that loves the western word mark jersey. I never was a fan until I picked one up recently (thanks DownhillGoat) and seeing them in person has completely changed my mind. Much like Blasty I fully expect in 10-15 years people will remanence about them and say how much they liked them.

Here's my take:
Third jerseys are supposed to be a little fun and weird. Problem with the Flames for the last 13 years though is that the main set was so bad that you couldn't have a more fun third jersey, the third jersey needed to be simple because the main set was bad.
However now that the main set is nice again they will be able to try different things with the third jersey. I'd much rather NHL teams just stick to and find a home and away set that works and never change it. (These retros for the Flames, Sabres went back to their classic look, Ducks should go back to their original jerseys, Jets a set of the two jerseys they've used for heritage classics.)
And then try some more fun third jersey designs. As third jerseys stuff like Blasty, the Flames word mark jersey, the Ducks wild wing jersey, the Bruins Bear face jersey, etc are great because they are meant to be something a little more different, only need to be around for a season or two, and are meant to be more creative.
But you need to have good and simple main sets in order to do that.

Personally not a fan. I’ve bitched about it before, but I don’t like jerseys with excessive busy piping. Just looks too busy to me. Loved the jersey in it’s time as a kid, but doesn’t do it for me now. I do like simple designs with minimal piping like most of the original six.

I get what you’re saying, but I don’t put these up there. Again, I’m in the minority I’m sure but I never liked the Islanders and Chicago jerseys. The rest yup. I just wished they put some effort into taking some of the elements from the retro and making it new. For me that would be minimized piping, more prominence of red and less of gold.

This is pretty minimal stripes though...so not sure how that's the issue.
Really it's the same set up as the Bruins jersey (for the home the striping pattern of Yellow-White-Yellow is identical).
