Of course, that said, if you spend assets to get late in the day signing rights, the player knows you are motivated to sign him and can drive a harder bargain.

Lehner, Mrazek, Talbot would all be decent choices for a 1B.

If this is true, how is Steinberg so confident Flames are signing Talbot to a one year deal Monday?
This courting period is pretty much a negotiation period IMO. I’m sure everyone is very careful about what gets documented.

I just think those 3 will have very different price tags. And expectations around term.
Talbot looks to be the bargain option which fits the Flames cap situation.

A big no thank you to Maroon for me. The guy is 30 yrs old, has his stanley cup ring, where is the incentive now to keep playing hard and going to those dirty areas that he is known for, there isn't one. Now its about topping up the bank balance for when he retires , without getting hurt.

Lehner is an elite goalie at this point.
Lots of games played, many strong seasons, Vezina finalist, perfect age.
He's far too good to be in a 1A/1B situation.

What bothers me about Maroon is his sub-par skating....

Maroon is big and has shown he can finish. Sign him if he comes cheap.

Lehner would be great but for once I'm hoping we roll the dice. I love me some BSD and I think a cheap contract for a motivated Talbot could pay dividends. Lehner probably costs more or as much as both combined.

Maroon has brouwer/neal written all over him. The only worse signing to be made this year will be Simmonds.

That is craaaazy money for a winger like Panarin; I really like his game and always have but he’s only got 4 seasons under his belt so that’s a big time commitment for someone who’s never had a contract longer then 2 years.

Friedman on 960 said he heard the Maroon/Flames rumor is not correct and unlikely.
Thinks Talbot is possible.

Maybe, but the Flames need to get bigger. They cannot go into another season with Gaudreau, Czarnik, Ryan, Dube, and Mangipane playing significant roles. The lineup is too small and we need some beef. If you can bring in some size on cheap contracts to compliment your small skilled guys, then it is probably a good thing to do. We're too small and too soft on both ends.

Bigger for sure, but not bigger AND slower. Maroon is slow

Yet he kept up with McDavid and scored 27 goals with him. Maroons speed is fine. It would be great to find a 6-3, 225 pound winger who can skate like the wind, but they are few and far between. Those that are available have their warts. Address the most pressing need, which is size and toughness IMO.

Not that exceptional? Top 30 scorer from the last 5 years. They very rarely ever hit UFA. Looking at the list only Pavelski and Panarin this year and Tavares in the past are the only players to have actually hit the open market.

He’ll get over 10 easy

This concern is overblown. Last year the Flames were virtually equal to the Boston Bruins in average height/weight, but without a giant on the blue line.

Let's say in a hypothetical scenario Lehner is available July 1st and you can get him signed. Do you then explore options for trading Rittich?
