Yes, his son Jagger loves Gaudreau.

He wasn’t awful but he wasn’t exactly stellar either. I didn’t like the first Donskoi, Burns or Thornton goals. Smith still needs to get some games in so I’d been fine if he started tomorrow against a weaker Red Wings team.

Nah - he turns away just as Benny skates in front of Dell and looks up-ice. It's hard to tell, but that is what he appears to do. If he saw it, he'd call it (and I'm no apologist for ANY ref....).

If you look at this closely:

At :20 you can see O'Halloran looking right at the net, but by the time it begins to change from :20 to :21 you can see him change and look elsewhere.

Frustrating because any of the 4 officials can call a spear. I don't see how all 4 missed the play.

That was the most frustrating part of the play. All four chose to dismiss an obvious penalty. This contributed to the remaining tone of the game. This crew should be reviewed and likely receive some further training. They should definitely be taken out of the loop for the playoffs. They really made a situation worse more than making it better.

I thought Rittich was okay. But I am betting he really wanted that Burns one back in particular, likely the Jumbo Joe one too. The Flames were not good defensively at times though, the 2nd pairing struggled in particular.

It's okay though, you can't expect him to have 100% quality starts. 60ish% is a very respectable number still.

That Burns shot was pretty wicked, despite him not getting all of it (by Burns standards). Back the other way on the right handed one timer. 98% of the righties in the league would have put that blocker side.

But yeah, no glaringly weak ones, which is all we have really been asking for. 5 goal games are going to happen. Give this squad some stops though and they’ll keep you in it.

Yeah, even perennial Vezina contenders like Gibson, Rinne, Vasilevskiy, etc. rarely exceed .650 quality starts over a season. Rittich is at .700 right now, so signs point to him having a few more statistical weaker games by the end of the season. It's inevitable, and it's good that it happens while he still plays really well, like he did against vancouver, and/or the team still wins, like last night.

Even last night, i thought he played a decent game. He made some big saves and let in some strange ones where all the skaters seemed to be asleep. That burns shot even looked like it curved, like a nice soccer shot. I agree that the 2nd pairing had a rough night. On the whole, it was a really nice team win from the flames. Contributions from everybody and full marks for the 8 goals they put up on the division challengers.

I'm amazed at the fact that our first line, one of the best in the league, has 3 guys on absolute steals of deals

Rittich's numbers are starting to decline but it's probably a combination of the team leaking good scoring opportunities as well as a few goals that Rittich would probably want back. It's great to see them win an 8-5 game but I feel this team is still giving up too many good scoring chances and not playing that well defensively.

~25 million gets us Gio, Johnny, Monahan, Lindholm 🙂

27 million gets the Oilers McDavid, Draisaitl and Lucic 😁

For another two and a half seasons or three cracks at the playoffs with that trio at 17 mil combined. That's our window to take advantage of a cost controlled top line and beef up the depth to make a push.

With how strong our "elite 5" are playing, and Rittich a top 5 goalie statistically I think it's worth bolstering the middle 6 with a someone else that can produce.

The way the flames have played the likes of Winnipeg, San Jose, Nashville and Colorado they may have a legitimate shot. I think you want to give the group the best chance you can. It's no longer stand pat and see and improve next season. You're a player for the conference now.

To be even more precise, they won because Dell could not identify a hockey puck to stop it. Clearly he thought they were playing ball hockey, as Bennett can surely attest.

Rittich deserves some slack for any off games. Smith isn't entitled to the same benefit of the doubt.

However, I do think that comments about goals on Rittich versus comments on goals against Smith are inconsistent. If that goal by Petterson was against Smith, there would be a lot fewer "what a snipe" comments and a lot more "make a big save".

Smith has lost a lot of good will due to many, many very bad goals. For almost a a calendar year. And for costing the team up to an estimated 8-10 points in the standings.

Rittich has earned a lot of good will by stealing many games, and stopping many shots that could have easily been goals .

Enjoy it while it lasts. Most probably, one day soon that old chunk of coal Smith will either retire, or if he is lucky resurface somewhere else.

Yea, I've been to some incredible games this year:

PIT 1-9L
COL 6-5W
EDM 4-2W
VGK 7-2W
DAL 3-4OTL
MIN 2-0W
TBL 4-5OTL

But last nights game takes the cake. New Years Eve, battle for first in the Pacific, sh*t ton of offence and the bloodbath in the final couple minutes.

The Dome was as loud as it's been this entire season, from chanting "BIG SAVE DAVE" numerous times to booing Erik Karlsson every time he touched the puck to literally making James Neal blush and smile ear to ear on the bench after scoring. Like seriously, he couldn't help but smile. That was the loudest point in the game.

And then of course when Bennett solidified his spot in the heads of every Sharks player/media/fan with that bone-crushing thunderous hit, the Dome absolutely erupted!

God I love me some Sam Fuc*ing Bennett!
