He grew up literally across the river from Philly.

Johnny isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future.

Can't say that for certain until the contract has been duly authorized, executed and delivered.

I can't wait for the you-tube video of Johnny saying (in his best W.C. Fields impersonation): "I'd rather be in Philly".

Or the half-hour special on TSN, culminating in... "I've decided that, this September, I'll be taking my talents to... South Broad Street in Philadelphia."

Monahan quick interview:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/monahan-...ng-term~913412
  • EDIT: "Its a Process"
  • Deal is getting there, looking forward to get it done
  • Wants to be here for a long time, so prefers longer term contract
  • Same situation as Gaudreau, something that they talk about
  • Will see Gaudreau tonight to have a chat
  • He wants to win in Calgary
  • He is prepared to take a hometown discount
  • Wants to give us a better chance to get a Stanely Cup

Good job Gino Reda doing a great interview and actually using some quotes instead of your "gut feeling".

Just to add:
Said "Its a Process" with regards to contract negotiations

Clearly he is being subconsciously manipulated by Treliving. I now fully expect a 8 year @ $2.3M AAV contract

He said "it's a process" making me wonder if it was really Monahan or Tree wearing a Monahan mask.

Wow that is pretty telling to come out and say you are willing to take a hometown discount in the midst of a long term contract discussion isn't it?

I seriously missed the mark on guessing Brouwer's contract the last time I did this, but that was a July 1 UFA thing and I've had better luck with extensions... so here goes.

AAV

Monahan Camp Ask: 6.5 million
Flames starting offer: 5.8 million
Settlement: 6.25 million
Adjusted for Treliving wizardry:: 6.125 million
Adjusted for hometown discount: 6 million

Term:
Monahan Camp Ask: 5 years (0 UFA)
Flames starting offer: 8 years (3 UFA)
Settlement:6 years (1 UFA)
Adjusted for Treliving Wizardry: 7 years (2 UFA)

Final verdict: $42 milion/7 years ($6 mill AAV).

He says he wants a long term contract. Market is pretty established for a long term deal (barkov, mackinnon et al).

So what is the hold up? I can't think of one single reason you wouldn't want Monahan at that $6m/per area for 6 or 7 years.

Pretty stoked to hear he wants long term contract and he's willing to take home town discount. So 8 years at 6 then?

Got to love that Mony.

So.. taking a hometown discount, and dining with Johnny to convince him to do the same?

Give them both 42M:
Monahan = 7 years, 6M per
Gaudreau = 6 years, 7M per

Monahan is long term, at a discount
Gaudreau is at a competitive rate, gets to UFA earlier, which gives him the chance to decide where he plays (hopefully stays here)

And while they don't have the same contract per se, you are committing the same $$ to both players. Both end up with a shade over what Giordano got, as you have to pay young talent to get that term (as opposed to give term to get to pay less per year to veteran talent)

6 years for Johnny would be a mistake. I want him and Monahan locked up for 8 years both players are worth it and 5 of those years the team should be a legit threat in the west.

excellent to hear the "process" is coming along.

Props to Gino for actually asking the questions we want asked and Monahan for answering them with what seemed to be sincerity.

get it done.

I want that too, but what if that is a non-negotiable item for Gaudreau's camp - that he is not at the max length of a deal?

Fact is, we know little of what is going on in the negotiation. I just have a feeling that is a point of contention for Gaudreau - the option to re-up sooner, and it could even be a strategy of the Flames to have the terms be 1 year apart, to avoid having to negotiate both at once again

Wonder if he's willing to take the discount because Johnny's camp wants more than expected?

Gaudreau doesn't get $7M+ if he only signs a 6 year deal. If he only wants a 6 year deal then he gets no more than $6M. If it was 8 years then $7.5M makes sense.
