@fan960boomer wondering how much the agent has to do with this? And what that agent may have instore for a certain other #Flames player?

Ritch Winter Puts the fear into me. I have heard other stories of players he has managed and the stance he took then and it did not work out well for the team.

No one wants to go to arbitration. Almost worth paying up just to avoid having to rip apart the player and create hard feelings. Treliving/Burke are no nonsense guys, but you have to think they love a player like Bouma and want to avoid this at almost all costs.
Something not right about this. Could very well be Rich Winter setting the stage.

He is Cody Franson's agent. And Holtby's. And Glencross. And Dwight King (comparable to Bouma).

I was just going to mention this as well.
Hes going to be busy with the Holtby arb coming up and hes taking the hardnose "my way" stance there too.

I think there might be a bit of a statement being made from both sides in preparation for the Giordano talks.

I don't like how uneasy Millions feels towards Rich Winter given how important Gio's next contract is for the Flames.
Yes Winter is playing hardball for his client but I really do feel like Winter is the grenade that'll blow it all up.
Re-signing Bouma shouldn't be getting this far. Should be an incredibly easy contract to hammer out without Arbitration.

I don't think Gio or Bouma would appreciate Bouma's future career being used to make a statement

Likely this.
One other thing to consider is the flames may be comfortable with what they believe a arb will award Bouma and are using this as a means of activating the secondary buyout period.

never thought this would actually go to arbitration ... really disappointing that there hasn't been an agreement. I know Winter isn't exactly an easy agent to deal with, but I still thought they'd find a deal that works for both sides.

Winter makes recommendations, but at the end of the day it is Lance that calls the shots.
He must feel pretty strongly about his position to take it this far.

In the future the org should put an asterisk beside any prospect represented by this guy. For the first player to go to arbitration for us in 10 years, it's not much of a contract. Low AAV and short term. This does not say much about Treliving and Winter's ability to negotiate with each other.

I think the secondary buyout period would still happen even if all of the Flames' cases were settled before a hearing. That secondary buyout window is triggered by arbitration filings, and is in effect "...within the forty-eight (48) hour period beginning on the third day following the later of: (i) the Club's receipt of its last salary arbitration award; or (ii) settlement of its last case", according to the SPC.
So the Flames should have a secondary buyout window from August 4-5, or sooner if all the cases are settled early.

Does Winter represent any Flames other than Gio and Bouma?

Bouma, Byron, and Jooris and 20 other players file for Salary Arbitration

Bouma isn't the first Flames player in 10 years to go to arbitration.
I still believe that Rich and Brad and both very no nonsense, tough negotiators hence the amount of time it takes them to come to an agreement.

Who would the Flames buyout?. If Smid is healthy he would be a candidate. I think there is a market for Raymond.

The others were settled before the hearings. Kiprusoff was the last Flame to go through an arbitration hearing.

I have no idea, and in fact doubt the Flames would buy anyone out. They just get that flexibility to do so due to arbitration filings.

Seems like a good way to alienate your players.
As tough as Winters may be, its still Bouma in the driver seat.
