Ryan Kennedy @THNRyanKennedy
According to Oliver Kylington's reps, it is unlikely he will come over to WHL Brandon - has two-year contract with AIK back home. #Flames

2013 Halifax
The Q is not that bad.

That is a flawed analysis as looking at the top Q team does nothing to tell you about the average or median QMJHL. The Q is known for insane trade deadline deals to stack one or two teams. Most people seem to believe the avg OHL or WHL team is stronger than the average Q team.
Looking at the draft and how many NHL defenceman each league produces and you see the WHL and OHL miles ahead of the Q. I bet the Flames would slightly prefer him to play in the WHL or OHL.

Hmm, would I honour a contract to play hockey in my home country where I can speak my native language and earn some good dough or would I move to Brandon Manitoba where I'd make a per diem, live with people I don't know and travel around western North America on a bus all winter?

BWK Kelly McCrimmon is one smart man. Takes #Flames Oliver Kylington in Euro Draft. Would think CGY would love kid to play for BWK. Shot at Memorial Cup on Brandon. Great for development.

Or play in a league that gives me the best shot at playing in the best league in the world, making millions of dollars, the NHL.
Not really sure which league is best for Kyllington, to be fair, but there are plenty of guys that have gone to the WHL for just that reason.

Developing at home in Stockholm for a year in a stable environment isn't a bad option. Roger Melin, the AIK coach, is one of Sweden's most experienced coaches and supposedly there's a good amount of money waiting to flow into the club to take it back to the top flight. Looking at their defenders, I think a reasonable guess is that he probably would get first pairing minutes. Although there are people who know that team much better than I do.
CHL, where focus is on development, probably wouldn't be a bad option either. Being stuck in the AHL logjam of defencemen wouldn't help at all.

I don't remember which thread I read it in, but one of the posters here who follows the WHL a lot noted that the Wheat Kings don't have any real defensive structure to their game, which is why all their defensemen seem to rack up the points; however, they also tend to not learn the defensive aspects.
Not sure if that is the environment the Flames want Kylington going to especially since learning the defensive aspects is one of the major things he needs to develop.

The AHL would be the worst place for him at this point in his development. Hopefully he plays for Brandon but if not I don't think staying in the AIK is a terrible thing.

interestingly, Hakan Loob was interviewed on Kylington and he thought the best move for his development was going to north america to play... he didn't think OK was getting a fair shot in Sweden and that going to North America would allow him a fresh start...

Pretty sure I heard the same kind of reports when Pavel Zacha was selected 1st overall in the draft last year that he was not coming over. Never know, I believe we will see him either with Brandon or in the AHL next season

If he keeps jumping around between clubs in Sweden, I would definitely agree with him. AIK has also been plagued by economic troubles and some internal fights recently. It is my impression that most of that stuff is solved now, which should provide greater stability for the club moving forward (hopefully).

Loob's comments, along with McCrimmon's and the fact that he just drafted Kylington, I'm going to say it's a safe bet that Kylington is playing for the Wheat Kings this season... I just don't think he know's it yet. The Flames brass likely do.

Everyone (fans, flames, kings and AIK) will have a better idea after the prospects camp.

I selfishly hope he plays in the WHL just so I can go watch him.

Ya I didn't realize the he was on 7 teams in 2 years. That's crazy, no wonder he couldn't find his feet.

Ditto. It's always fun to watch Flames prospects when they come through town.

Why was he moving around so much? Has that been brought up?

It was more bouncing around leagues then teams.
2012-2013: Sodertalje SK J20 - SuperElit
2013-2014: Farjestad J20 - SuperElit
2013-2014: Farjestad - SHL
2014-2015: Farjestad - SHL
2014-2015: Farjestad J20- SuperElit
2014-2015: AIK - Allsvenskan
Started on Sodertalje junior team in 2012, moved to Farjestad J20, was good enough there in 13/14 that he was promoted to their top tier team. Last season started on Farjestad top league team but struggled and was demoted to the junior team, but then was loaned to AIK in the Swedish second division.
So worked his way up to the top league in his 16 year old season (leading to him ranked as a top 5 pick), then struggled and fell back down the charts in his pre-draft season (leading to him falling to 60).
It's why it was weird to hear Loob was so high on Kylington and talking about how he didn't get a fair shake, since it was his team he was bouncing around with.

Yeah, this looks about right.
One thing that can be added is the comment by AIK's GM when they signed him to a two-year contract now this summer. It sounds like they know what he needs moving forward:
Quote:
"Oliver is an amazing talent who needs playing time in order to develop. He has already had time to impress both in SHL and Allsvenskan. But like with all other players in this age it goes up and down and therefore it is important with stability and continuity. AIK can offer the playing time and security that is needed for his development to continue in the right direction." - Anders Gozzi

Would have been pissed if we had spent the #15 pick on him.
Would have been delighted to grab him with the #45 pick however, if he were to fall that far.
Absolutely ecstatic to use a couple thirds to grab him - what a steal!
Treliving truly had one hell of a weekend! Absolute homerun for the organization.
