So you're saying it's a win/win/win. Literally zero reason for anyone to be upset about this right?

Why would we want to give a rookie a spot without proving themselves? If we get to the end of training camp and Setoguchi has earned the rw spot, on any line, over any of those rookies, then good.
And penciling in those 12 forwards is pretty meaningless when you look at the injuries the Flames will certainly take this year. Last year they lost 290 man games due to injury. Thats more than 3.5 full roster spots that need to be filled just from injuries.

I like this low risk, medium reward signing, especially if Setoguchi can display some work ethic and leadership in his home town.

From people I have talked to I have heard Seto is into partying with Heatley, rather then getting in shape for the next season.
I was impressed by Hartley and getting everyone to buy in, as well as with the leadership in the locker room (Gio/Big Ern/Backlund) so this could work. If he is committed to hockey again this guy could put up 50+ points again. A bit of upside here with no downside so I can't complain.

I had to sleep on it, but I think I figured out your formula.
1. Unverifiable and blatantly wrong claim
2. Excuse as to why previous blatantly wrong claim was made.
3. Insult
So let's keep it going!
As was pointed out, not only have you just admitted that Hudler did NOT play RW all last year (you've now switched to saying he started on the RW all last year), but you're still wrong:

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=697982
etc. (you'll notice the proper use of etc.)
In October he started RW exclusively, in November and December? Not even close. I didn't check January to April, but feel free.
As has been asked, where have you seen Poirier play? You're not from Gatineau, so enlighten me as to where your wealth of information comes from.

Player - games missed
DEFENCE
T.J. Brodie - 1
Chris Butler - 0
Mark Giordano - 18
Shane O’Brien - 37
Kris Russell - 14
Derek Smith - 68
Dennis Wideman - 36
Total 174 games or 2.1 players per game
FORWARDS (14)
Mikael Backlund - 6
Sven Baertschi - 56
Lance Bouma - 4
Joe Colborne - 2
TJ Galiardi - 20
Curtis Glencross - 44
Jiri Hudler - 7
Tim Jackman - 72
David Jones - 34
Brian McGrattan - 6
Sean Monahan - 7
Matt Stajan - 19
Lee Stempniak - 30
Michael Cammalleri* - 19
Total 326 games or 4 players per game
(Cammy was injured so they had Street in there so I ignored Street)
So based on last year, we have 2 additional full time (82 game) spots on D and 4 additional full time spots on forward.
I think Johnny will be playing some significant NHL this year whether he "starts" or not.

I don't think you can count the games of players sent down (ie Bärtschi) or traded (ie Jackman) in your stats.
Better may be to add up all the games played in a Flames uniform (I'm too lazy to do it) divided by 82. You would have to factor in backup goalies though cause the don't get a GP but they are there of course.

Nevermind. I didn't think that through. It has to be an answer of 20 doesn't it.

I'm indifferent to the signing. I was never a big fan of the guy, felt his numbers were inflated by playing on one of the top lines in hockey at the time when he was with the sharks.
by all accounts out of winnipeg, he was lazy and his compete level was severely lacking. that being said, this was likely a bit of an eye opener for the guy, that he's really playing for not only his next contract but for a chance to stick in the NHL altogether.
I can understand the frustration by some who were hoping to pencil in a rookie or two into the year's starting lineup. Well the bar has been set. Every forward position in the top 9 is clearly up for grabs, and will have to be earned. Any of colborne, setogouchi, jones, mcgratton, bollig, could have their assumed spot taken by the kids during camp.
i am hoping to see some very hungry rookies pushing a vet out of the lineup, specifically baertchi, gaudreau, granlund and reinhart. Of course, that's not to forget a guy like knight could come out and push for that 4th line role also.

The guy is 2 years older than Backlund. Far from old. Jesus.
I'm huge on seeing some prospects making the big club this season, especially GODreau, but if they can't outplay a guy making less than the rookie max, then they obviously shouldn't be on the team.
Personally, I think JG will blow Setoguchi and most of the vets out of the water. But that's just my hunch. I won't panic until we see rookies out playing veterans and being sent down despite that. As long as the best players are the ones playing, we have no reason to complain.

I was nervous they were going to sign Heatley so Seto is a pleasant surprise. That's how I'm looking at it. We have to ice an NHL team.

I know. I'm just saying that they clearly needed help on RW and I was worried they were going to sign him.

The season seriously can not start soon enough. I see this signing as two fold. The first it creates a situation where people will have to battle out and earn a spot. Good.
Secondly, if for some reason Setoguchi makes the team it means he out played a player on the verge of making the team. The flip side of that is we are going to a rather strong team farm team IMO. Installing the culture and having a winning team is probably a lot better for the prospects coming up. This helps insulate the prospect and probably a better environment to develop. Good
Losing sucks and even for the most stable veteran it can get taxing. The Flames have worked so hard building the culture that right now the start of the season isn't as important as the end when slotting in the rookies. I think what they did last year was the perfect way to insert youth to help development. The end game for these kids isn't September or October 2014, it's September/October 2015 and beyond.

Yes. Anyone who is upset about this is upset over something that that hasn't even happened yet. A whole bunch of extrapolation of things that "could be". Why be upset now and assume your worst case scenario will play out?
Get up set about Seto taking a the spot of a prospect who has outplayed him, is best served to have their development happen in the NHL but instead gets sent down because management is favouring veterans.....................when it actually happens.
People shouldn't be pissed because the Flames signed a reasonable player to a reasonable contract and now it's making it harder for them to fall asleep at night slotting prospects into the Flames roster.

After watching AC's highlight collection, his scoring touch gives me a real strong vibe of a right-handed Monahan.
