Westgarth is a FA and isn't a similar player. Bollig can actually play hockey.

Westgarth is a borderline NHL player.
Bollig is an established grinder from a contender.
Pretty big difference

It looks to me that Flames wanted to get bigger/younger and Stempniak was the odd man out. I think he would have signed.

We already know this about Calgary Flames trade acquisition Brandon Bollig: He’s fearless.
Rewind the tape to Nov. 27, 2013, at the Saddledome, and Bollig — then a member of the Chicago Blackhawks — dropped his mitts for a dance with Flames enforcer Brian McGrattan.
The 6-foot-2, 223-lb. Bollig was on the receiving end of a flurry of rights from McGrattan — 97.1% of fans on hockeyfights.com have scored it a victory for the Flames heavyweight — and needed repairs for a cut near his left eye after the bout, but that’s not really the point.
In this case, the statement was more important than the judges’ scorecards.
“That’s the reason I did it — to let my teammates know that I’m willing to do that against anyone and for anyone on our team,” Bollig said. “I hope my teammates now in Calgary and the coaches and the fans and everyone there realizes that I bring that element, that I’ll do whatever it takes for my team. I hope they realize that.”
Bollig admitted Saturday’s trade was a “shock,” but he seemed encouraged by conversations with both Treliving and Flames head coach Bob Hartley that included talk of an “expanded role.”
“I think any player would want that,” said Bollig, who scored seven times, added seven assists and registered a team-leading 203 hits but averaged only 10:16 of icetime per night in 82 regular-season outings for the Blackhawks last winter.
“The more you play, the better you feel, I think. I loved my role here in Chicago, but when you change teams, you get the new look and new coaches think different things about certain roles and certain players. I’m excited to see where this takes me and, hopefully, expand my role and have a good exciting season up in Calgary.

maybe they are planning on a 3rd line role for him - to spread out the hurt
I wouldn't mind that while we're in 'develop the kids' mode

Another guy who trains MMA sorta stuff... Could you imagine how frustrating our team would be if McGrattan and Bollig trained all the kids to know how to fight? Not necessarily fight to win, but enough to keep anyone from taking advantage of them. Especially if someone like Byron was trained up, everyone would think twice before hitting any of our players. The psychological aspect of our team would be amazing.
Combinations of Bollig, McGrattan, Byron, Bouma and Wolf are hugely interesting IMO. Heck, if we train Backlund and a few of the top guys to be players not afraid to fight... damn...
How impressed would you guys be to have a team that focuses on having as many Gordie Howe Hat tricks next year? I salivate at this potential idea. I loved the Gordie Howe hattrick era of Iginla, if a whole team had that skill and mentality? Man...

Type of player the Flames need - can stand not only stand up for the youth on the team, but can play a regular shift and actually do well out there. We really, really need a guy like Bollig to come charging out and lay some guys out with hits. Calgary gets harder to play against, and this helps the current youth build confidence and develop the right way when they are surrounded by other players willing to do anything for their team.
I like the move!

I would play bollig with gaudreau for most shifts, and I'm not kidding.
Bollig can skate and move the puck well enough. Mcgrattan, for all of his face punching prowess, can't really play more than spot shifts.

Isn't that 2 left wingers though? Or is JG a centre?

As of now the Flames only have two right shooting wingers as NHLers, so some lefties will be playing on the right side.
Jones and McGrattan are the right shooting wingers.

JG is an LW, but he can play RW as well.
And I would imagine that Bollig could probably play on the right side (he also plays C)

Ah ok, makes sense.
Personally, I probably prefer JG not on RW though.

I love this acquisition. Led the hawks in hits and averaged 10 minutes a game on a stacked team.
Upgrade on Westgarth but I have a feeling Westy might be back too.
I would rather Bollig be Galiardi's replacement and keep Westy as the 13th forward for when we play Wancouver.

Big Ern was on the fan 960 talking about the kind of hockey being played down the final stretch of the season This year.
You cannot disagree with the energy, production produced by this line.
Add Bolig.
Western conference teams.
The Flames are gonna kick some________

Free Pardy hats for the fans sitting in the front row at the Saddledome next year.
