Ya, pretty much all new games are $70 now. The current generation launched with $60 games, but about 3 months in they all jumped. E3 sale for the win.

That's longer than most games. Seems like a reasonable price tag to me.
I think of it this way. A Blue Ray disc of a current movie is what, $20. That's maybe 3 hours of entertainment if you watch it twice. A sports game gets probably 100 hours or more.
Seems reasonable

I typed a long reply then realized you are either trolling or being sarcastic because no one can honestly follow that train of thought and consider it logical.

I feel a little bad as I sometimes feel that I spam about that annual sale too much in the various video game threads. But yet people still miss out on it. Heck, even Amazon got in on the party this year.
I went for the "ultimate edition" that retails for $80 - locked it in for less than $50.

A long time ago when there were both Sega sports games and EA the games seemed to progress faster and ever since the NHL sold the sole rights the games seem to stagnate for long periods of time.
Makes me wonder if the NHL really makes more money have only 1 license for a mediocre franchise when they could have 2 licenses for 2 good franchises. EA's NHL games would have made more with better quality productions. If you love the games that's cool, not really the fanbases fault that EA has the monopoly here but it arguably makes the games much worse.

It's fun to throw out hypotheticals but it's important that when doing so facts are correct.
2k Sports didn't stop making NHL games because EA Sports has the sole rights. In 2012 2K said they were taking a year off their hockey franchise on Xbox and playstation to revamp their game. This was done because it was far inferior to EA's offering. I might be wrong here but I think you will find EA has no such exclusivity deal with the NHL.
2Ksports also had a baseball game, it was terrible and pretty much unchanged for about 4 years straight. This did not force EA to make a better baseball game. The largest changes and best advances are arguably the show introduction which was after 2K had already released poor showings in 2K12 & 2K13. They announced they will not release a game in 14 because they know they have an inferior product and sales show that.
To assume 2K releasing another terrible hockey game would lead to innovation would be a stretch because it did no such thing in their previous hockey, baseball and football offerings. It seems the only thing they get right is basketball.

Aww but you are wrong here, the assumptions I made are because EA bid on the rights for the NFL franchise and the NFL2k5 game had better and more fluid movement than Madden 14. Also, try not to be so condescending when correcting someone as it's a fairly large character flaw to be so indignant (nobody's perfect)

Any ideas how a layman can get a deal on Xbox one NHL15? $70 sounds extreme.

argh, i am not much of a gamer anymore. the sole reason i turn on the 360 is to play nhl, and live out my dirty hockey fantasy (i just drafted draisatl and was lucky enough to win the lottery next season and get mcdavid).
I turn it on this morning to start the season and play with the newly built team, and my disc is no longer readable (my xbox has been really loud for a while now, and looks like it scratched the crap out of the disc all of a sudden).
looks like i need to accelerate a next gen budget sooner than i had hoped

Wait a month? IIRC 14 was $70 when it came out on the last gen and dropped to $60 within weeks.
On a bit of a tangent, this came up in the E3 thread too. I'm not entirely sure why people are bent out of shape about a marginal increase for the new gen games (not pointing out anyone in this specific thread, I've noticed it a few places now). I recall paying $70-80+ for snes games twenty years ago (NHL '96 was $80 when it came out).
Games have stayed close to par, and substantially less when you factor things in like the Steam sales, E3 pre-sale, or the fact that many newer releases get dropped to the $20-30 range within less than a year of release. Basing it strictly off inflation, new releases should be in the $100-150 range now, and they're not.
And as Street Pharmacist pointed out, 100 hours (or a lot more) for $70 is pretty reasonable, IMO.

Which in today's dollars is a whopping $147.65. And yet, still, totally worth it for that game I'm sure you will agree. Actually if you still had the cartridge and packaging it would probably be worth three or four times as much now.

I did the same; I think it ended up being 48 bucks. You know you're buying the thing, don't even pretend you aren't, so why not pre-order it?
