Let's throw some honey at Vrbata instead.

If Setoguchi wants to play close to home, offer him a 1 year "show me" type contract.
Right handed shooting right winger, just 27 years old, good speed, and although he's not huge, he can play a physical game.
It would be worth the gamble IMO to see if he can flourish with Hartely and his staff.

Would we consider Gaborik? I realize he has injury history, but we have AHL players that could fill in if he gets injured.

Makes you wonder if Treliving ties with any of the Coyotes players. There are a few I'd actually consider going after (all UFA's):
RWers
Vrbata - Could see him playing with Backlund and Hudler.
Defense
Summers (young, has size),
Morris (nice homecoming, could play top 4 minutes if he had to, most likely would be a 5/6 D).
If we have a chance on Stone, I would like him too.
Getting some defense from the Coyotes would benefit the Flames. Wotherspoon could probably play another year in the AHL and be a call up when we need him. He should be fully in the NHL in the 2015-16 season.

You had me until you said Morris. Really dumb hockey player, no thanks!

I have a feeling that Hartley is the kind of coach that can get Setoguchi going. Also, I think he and Monahan could work really well together.

I think we can throw some money at Niskanen, but in the end he probably wouldn't want to go with us.
As for Bissonnette, I don't think he really meets what we need. Besides, I really like what we found in Westgarth, I feel that he proved himself worthy of an extension for a year or two.

We don't want Morris. He's been declining quickly on the Coyotes roster and was disastrous this year. I know part of it was due to a family issue (his father passed) but he's been going downhill for a couple years.
Chris Summers was completely misused by the Coyotes this year and would probably like a fresh start. I could see him accepting a deal from Calgary (or any team) to get out of that system.
Vrbata would be a great addition and having Hudler and Smid here might be a big help in getting him signed here as he does prefer to play with countrymen. I know the Coyotes were expecting big things from him when they traded for Erat but that never panned out. Having a line with Hudler and Vrbata would be great. Huds has the shot and Vrbata has uncanny tipping skills in front of the net.

And I'm still putting money on Peter Mueller re-joining the NHL and hopefully the Flames. Addresses Size, skill and positional needs. Although he does lack a certain amount of that Buzz word. I'm interested in watching the Worlds just to see how he does. Maybe he lines up with Johnny.
EDIT: 46 points in 49 games this year in the Swiss-A. So at least he's producing over there.

Does LA have the capspace to spend 3m on their #6/7 Dman?

Re the decrease of CAD, many season ticket holders pay before the season starts. Too lazy to recall or look up the exchange rate in the summer, and obviously there are other revenues all year long, but it may not be as severe of an impact in that regard at least.

My bet is Ryan Callahan. I know Burkie thinks a lot of him.

So pleased to see that Jagr is about to sign for another year in NJ, I really didn't want him joining the flames, as others have suggested.

I like Westgarth, he just isn't very good at hockey. None of these guys are good really, but guys like Ern transcend the position and are very valuable team guys, imo.
Biz can play a little, and might bring some of the same sort of value. Would not be averse to seeing him in Calgary, over others in similar role.

This is exactly right. I really don't see any value to a guy like Westgarth (especially when McGrattan is on the ice at the same time). Sure, he seems like a nice guy and stands up for his teammates, but having him and Grats on the ice together usually means a lot of work for the goaltender. I'd much sooner have consistent 4th liners like Bouma and Galiardi who can play hockey while bringing some energy. McGrattan is still there if the muscle is needed.

I'd rather see Westgarth sent packing and room made for a young guy in our system. If Ferland wasn't hurt I was say he would be a good candidate. Hanowski seems like a good fit on that 4th line and could easily turn into a Bouma type player given opportunity.

The only good thing about Biznasty's game is his tweets from the bench. The guy is a bad hockey player in every way. Not good on either side of the puck and not a very good fighter. He's like Westgarth, but with a good twitter account.

I don't think that Burke would ever put his Flames in the position they were under Feaster.... where we had Jackman , who was injured, as the only player in the system who was at all a deterrent. Ferland, Bouma and Hanowski would have their play and attitude severely limited if they were the one(s) that got paired off with the other teams legit goon or were the guys sent out to send a message (Vancouver style) that the Flames are not going to be pushed around.
Having Westgarth around when McGratton is injured let Bouma/Colbourne work on playing big without getting called on it.
