For those who fear Berra might become great just remember the fact they have a young very good goalie ahead of him in Varlamov. They paid a pretty penny to Varlamov who had shown more and had greater potential.
Also, Blues scouts who also know a bit or two about prospects and goaltending did not want to bring Berra over (I'm taking this from the fact Berra has in the past said he wanted to come over but the Blues weren't interested in signing him). What does that say? they didn't think he was very good. IMHO he's not a good goalie and will need lots of AHL time to even become a backup.

What's this? Some fans actually think that trading Berra is going to come back and haunt us? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
Ortio in two games has showed better positioning and calmer demeanor. For the record I think Berra had backup potential but the Oilers were giving up 4th round picks for two backup goaltenders with more of a track record than Berra. A 2nd round pick is a steal and even Burke said he couldn't say no to that deal.

Lots of over reaction on both sides to me in this debate.
I liked Berra, I do think he has upside, but so too does a second round pick, plus the pick comes with options and the ability to do things on draft day.
Young teams have lots of "if this guys develops ..." cases in their system, nice in this case to move one of those for a future pick and move the cycle from a 26 year old with limited NHL experience to an 18 year old that hasn't been drafted yet.
Berra looked better to me in the last 10 games he played. More quiet with his motion, which was his downside.
Will he burn us? Maybe ... but it's a sound move no matter how you look at it.

how could it burn us anyway...he is a UFA and the Avs were obviously gonna throw more money at him than the Flames would want to match
2nd pick>nothing

I don't mind if he develops into a solid starter so long as Flames have good goaltending too. In fact I'd probably be happy for Berra if that happened.
You need to make decisions with your goalies because you can only carry a few and it's possible that they would have let Berra walk after this season anyway. It's not hard to see the logic - Rämö is signed for next season and they think having Ortio in the AHL for another year could be a waste.
So Colorado offers a great deal. No brainer, even if it could work out for Avalanche as well.

Not sure why there is even a debate on this? How good would he have to become for us to regret trading him for a second? Kipper good? Even then, I'm sure Sharks fans are okay with the return they got in that deal.

I think everyone would of thought a 3rd rounder would have been a steal..
A 2nd rounder is highway robbery.
Best value deal of the day by any team, except maybe MTL.

I honestly thought it was going to be a 7th rounder when it was first announced on 960.

And that fact, that everyone seems to know (except Garth snow) is probably why his value was so low.

The 2nd rounder will likely be around 56th-57th. I hope Burke packages it for another 1st.

Ortio looks more like a possible Kipper replacement than Berra ever did.

I think Colorado is poised to be out in the 1st round of the playoffs.

Patrick Roy is also known to be absolutely out of his mind sometimes too.

anything can happen, but I wouldn't bet on Colorado over either Chicago or St. Louis. Could be a sweep

what are the draft order rules now?
based on last year, I would guess:
30 SCP
29 SC finalists
28 conference finalist
27 conference finalist
? - 26 other division winners
15 - ? remaining playoff participants that were knocked out in the first two rounds
Colorado has a shot at winning the division but it will be tough. If not, they face either Chi or StL in the first round. But they will have one of the highest point totals for non-division winners. So I think the most likely scenario is something around 22-24 (assuming a 1st or 2nd round loss)

Berra was decent but nothing special and will likely become a solid back up. Ortio is the clear cut goalie of the future for the Flames right now this kid possesses Kipper esk quality with his movement, battle to find the pucks through screens, positioning and rebound control, I'm sold on the kid.
Burke must still be laughing at what he got back for Berra.
