Also why not wash a reusable ice pack? I’m not in my 40s either but I had a few ice packs on rotation and it was fine. Gave em a good scrubbing after each use and good as new.
I wouldn’t throw out (or even wash) a bath towel after every use, and that thing gets everywhere.

I refroze the bag after use and threw it out after one week due to the freeze thaw cycles on a food product. I didn't have any malleable frozen gel packs, and when I got my procedure done (Star wars day 2021), the cheapest gel packs were like $15-20+ for the tiny ones and/or would take weeks/months to arrive due to covid supply chain disruptions. That's why $4-5 in bags of frozen peas went in rotation along with 2 of those with those tiny frozen packs that I got from the clinic when I left.
No lie, my wife thought the frozen pea idea was stupid and was against it. As a result, I thought I'd just get by with the little frozen gel packs from the clinic. When she confirmed the supply disruption and pricing herself, she was the one to purchase the frozen peas and put them into rotation. One day, I asked for an ice pack and she returned with bag of frozen peas in a pillow case with a look like she was holding back raucous laughter.
And it's not like they were left in warmth until they turned to mush. They'd be returned to the freezer after 10-15 minutes of use and the peas were still in solid/not soft form. I mean, if you don't want mush as easily, the other suggestion I read online was frozen corn. But peas were considerably cheaper at the time and more readily available than gel packs during the covid supply disruption.
