But he got danced around by some weak move in the Be a Pro trailer.

I hope you can get Gretzky with teams other than the Oilers.

Looks like Wayne, Gordie, and possibly Roy will be in there. I'm guessing Orr as well. Bobby Hull? Anyone else want to take a stab?

Looks like an outline of Messier in that picture as well.

Pretty lame that this was the big announcement that they were building up the whole time.

Are we sure this was their 2nd "big announcement"? Didn't they have the NHL all-star players before?

I believe they had famous teams before, but the players were only identified by numbers. Now that I think about it perhaps it was the 2k series?

I think they just had the Montreal Canadians legends team. But it was for their 100 year anniversary

I don't see how hard it would be to put a bunch of legends teams in. The '89 Flames, the 80's dynasty Oilers, the dynasty Islanders, the stacked Red Wings and Av's teams from the early 00's, etc.

That'd be way better than putting 15 legend players. I mean how hard can it be to put a player in the game, give him stats and a name. Only like 7 players look like who they actually are, so forget the graphics for them.

EA is really starting to annoy me, because they add nothing new to the game and every year I keep buying the game (although I do play the hell out of the game).

Licensing issues definitely makes it more difficult to put in full teams than a handful of individual players, it's not impossible but it's not as easy.

Yes, it was 2K. I remember having to go online to find out the actual players that went with the numbers and editing them (name only, IIRC). Not all the numbers matched up (like 2 or 25 for Calgary's 89 team), but some you could guess (the center on the Oilers rated 96 overall, etc.).

It was pretty extensive, quite a few legendary teams.

Yup, licensing is the problem with getting players who no longer play the game. Current players are all easily accessible, as EA has an agreement with the NHLPA to use their likeness. EA would have to approach each legend and most likely pay a sum of money to use them in their game, similar to the issues the NBA franchises had with getting Michael Jordan for almost a decade.

If I remember correctly the announcers would do the play by play with the real names (Gretzky, McDonald, etc) after you edited the names. It was pretty cool actually.

If 2K could have in any way competed with EA's gameplay, the EA hockey series would be in the same place as the EA NBA series right now.
