Going tomorrow night and i think it's in this HFR 3D format. Guess this is one time where being in nz is actually advantageous as far as movie release dates go. Cos' i assure you it aint an advantage 99.9 percent of the time.
None of the other movies came even close to setting any opening records. I really don't know how you justify such high expectations. This movie will make a lot of money, but alas, The Avengers it isn't.
Got my tickets booked and fresh off a re read of this classic story, ready to rock and roll.
Three hours of fresh Tokien based footage...

Not sure that I'd recommend the HFR. I think as has been said, some people will like it and others not. Next time I'd like to see it in 2D and will try to see the second and third parts in that format as well. Not really much of a spoiler, but
Spoiler!
Genuinely enjoyed the movie. It retains the sort of more whimsical feel of the novel by comparison to the LOTR, while still being grounded in that universe and adding some depth by hinting at darker powers behind the scenes in middle earth.
just watched it, awesome, recaptures the LOTR feeling, it feels like the same world, same fantasy realm, same characters, despite the 10 year gap.
Does a good job of adding to the story to help interweave the hobbit with LOTR. Strated a little from source material, but to me it was in a good way.
the 48FPS and 3d was done well, nothing in your face, just a better cleaner richer image.
Spoiler!
Frodo makes a cameo, poor ####### doesn't know what he's about to get himeself into.
Fixed.

Yeah that was pretty much my feeling. I mean more people are going to start seeing it soon, definitely looking forward to the reactions. There were some things, can think of one scene in particular, that didn't really sit with me, but as as a whole piece, loved it. Can't shake the feeling that it reminded me of the pure fantasy films of the 80s or even 70s. It has that sort of reckless fantasy abandon.
Spoiler!
Would loved to have seen a mostly practical special effects film.. models, puppets, etc, and in general more practical effects, but you're just not going to pull off the scale of some of these setpieces and creature designs that way. Do need to see it again, (in 2D!!!) but generally feel there was a reasonable mix of effects styles.

I am excited! I think the movie is going to be great.
One of my biggest complaints about movies is that they aren't long enough on average. A lot of movies cut out important storytelling because they are terrified that audiences can't sit still for more than 90-120 minutes.
Probably the best example of that was Kingdom of Heaven which was a decent movie in theatres (144 minutes). Problem? They cut out 50 minutes and a MAJOR CHARACTER. Ridley Scott was furious that the studio would not let him release his version of the movie. They cut it down despite his extreme misgivings.
Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut is 192 minutes long and is a great movie. The difference between this and the theatrical release is night and day. Coincidentally, it is hard to find the theatrical release on DVD/Blu-Ray because the Director's Cut, as a film, is so superior.
So, after that rant, I am 100% certain I will not have issues with the pacing/length of The Hobbit. I'm sure it will be an awesome film.
Go to the washroom before the movie, stock up on snacks, and immerse yourself in Middle Earth for 169 minutes. Then start looking forward to parts 2 (Dec. 13, 2013) and 3 (July 18, 2014)!

The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true. Go Flames Go!
I have to agree with some of the points the critics are making, while it was still very good compared to what we see in theaters these days, it didn't come close to matching the LotR trilogy. I would give it three and a half stars out of five.
I enjoyed my experience last night. I'm a firm believer in 48 FPS now. I'm torn on all the additional content. They're really mucking about with the timeline in terms of content from Unfinished Tales etc. But when you think about the LotR trilogy, they mucked about a lot in those films too. Aragorn not getting Andúril until RotK? If I got over that, I can get over this.
My girlfriend the Tolkien purist had issues. But she got over it.

Are people actually seeing it in HFR? While it was filmed at 48fps, only about 1,000 or the 25,000 screens that will be showing the Hobbit have the technology to display it at 48fps [Link]. The rest will show it at the traditional speed.

I wish they would make up for snubbing Tom Bombadil and Goldberry in TFOTR.

I absolutely loved the movie. I had an overwhelming sense of awe throughout large parts of it. I really liked the HFR and 3D. I saw the movie in 3D HFR IMAX and I strongly recommend the experience. The movie DEFINITELY was not too long and was certainly not boring if you like Middle Earth.
Peter Jackson has done it again!
