I just got back from a weight loss conference in Milwaukee. The organization that I belong to (TOPS - Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) paid my way + gave me $600 for accommodations/meals as I was one of award winners.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
In any case, the conference was very educational. Being that I am male, I went more for the nuts and bolts rather than the touchy-feely stuff. But I learned quite a bit.
- People were asking the nutritionist/trainer about the "Calorie Restriction Diet" promoted by Dr. Oz since he says that "studies show it can double lifespans". Yeah. Studies from 1934. On mice. Restricting yourself to 1500 calories a day and taking vitamin supplements is a tough and unnecessary means of losing weight. Setting a moderate calorie level and exercising more is, in her opinion, a far better option.
- Unless you are sweating like a pig from something like running a half-marathon in 30C weather like I did yesterday, you are better off just drinking water during sporting events than sugar-filled "sports drinks".
- Try different activities. Some great ones for burning calories are water polo, rock climbing or spinning classes. And while I find it too monotonous, jumping rope is one of the best calorie burners around.

Rock climbing is the sport of kings while water polo is a gateway activity to social discord.
Seriously, go to an indoor climbing gym and do laps (climbing up and down, not belaying down) using easy holds. You will be amazed at how much stronger you get. This is not quite a beginner climbing activity but you build up to it.
Has anyone here done anything with the four-hour-body?
One of the main claims in the book is that the author gained 34 pounds of muscle in 28 days, without steroids and with a combined total work-out time of 4 hours.
I've picked up the book and leafed through it and the science in it I find particularly appealing. Since I'm moving soon and my lifestyle will probably change pretty drastically I'm planning on picking the book up and giving it a shot.

Today I ran 5k in 31 mins! This is huge for me. When I started 5 months ago I couldn't run a minute.
Awesome work! I've actually been trying to do the same thing myself. A few weeks ago I clocked in at 4.52km in 30 minutes which is a record for me! 5km is next on my hit list.
I also bought these Sketcher SRR shoes from the States and I'm hoping they help me a bit with running and losing a bit of weight and help with the pain I get in my knees.
For those of you with a smartphone, get RunKeeper. It's free, and helps you track your runs. I've been using it for two months now, and it's a god-send. I have improved from 4.5 km in 30 minutes to 6.5 km in 30 minutes over the last 8 weeks, and it really motivates you when you see your pace getting better with every run.

I've wanted to post in this thread for a while now, but didn't want to post without accomplishing something first. Finally have something to write! In May 2011, I was 217 lbs - heaviest (fattest) in my life. I was 175 lbs in 2005.
On June 27th, I started my strict healthy food diet (along with lots of Ball Hockey and a fairly active day job) and as of this morning I am 197.6 lbs! I planned on losing 2 lbs a week, but so far the fat is burning a little quicker than expected. The plan was to be 205 lbs by today originally! Feels great!
Since I have stayed at 180 thanks to my 2 week binge in BC/Seattle I have started to play some tennis. I think by next week or so I should be back to 175 and can continue to chip away to 165. I really haven't bee trying all that hard lately but my total calories a day is still very low. Bad news is I have another trip to Seattle 2 weekends from now that is going to be filled with lots of beer and bad food. Luckily it is just for a weekend and shouldn't harm me to much

I *thought* I had read that he actually lost a tonne of weight before going on his muscle gains. So in reality, he was probably just coming back to his normal size + a few pounds. However, I dont know if the article I read was true, and I can't find it.

Are you serious?
I don't know a lick about this book, but I can say with 100% certainty that this is 100% BS.
Seriously, if there was actually a way to gain 34lbs of muscle in 4 weeks and only work out 4 hours total in that time, there would be no fat people in the world, and this guy would be a billionaire.
If putting on that much muscle that easily was possible, there would be a lot of really embarassed body builders right now.
Edit: Holy crap, I just did about 2 minutes of reading on that site, and it's hillarious.
Anyone who is wondering if a book is legit when it's list of claims are:
Gain 34 lbs of muscle in 4 weeks with 4 hrs of gym time
sleep 2 hrs a day and feel great
achieve 15 minute female orgasms (yup, that is exactly the kind of thing someone writing a legit breakthrough workout book would include)
Needs to give their head a shake.

Man, I really didn't want to be posting in this thread. Probably because I'm afraid of being held accountable. And partly because I thought I wouldn't need the motivation of this thread to lose weight. But reading some of the stories on here is truly inspiring.
I've always been a more muscular guy and the fat on my body is pretty well distributed, making it not as noticeable. So being 5"11 and 228 lbs, I still look fairly fit, with obvious areas of improvement. But I've always wanted to get down to 195.
In April of this year, I started eating healthy and working out more. I actually got down to about 214. But after about a month my motivation started to slip and I gained back the weight.
So here I am. Starting weight of 227 today. My goal is to lose 12 lbs over the next 4 weeks.
If feel like I'm standing up to introduce myself at an AA meeting. About a year and half ago I was at my heaviest (355), I lost around 35 pounds last year and then gained some back. Last December, I really hit rock bottom and was probably the most unhappy I've ever been. I absolutely hated the person I had become and knew I needed to make changes. So far I've gone from around 330 in late January to 273 today.

I think that's where I was at. I was unhappy with myself and my life. And if you are unhappy with something, you have to make the change. I think the issue with most obese people is that they ARE happy. There is no motivation to lose to weight. Pizza and beer while watching the hockey game ... family, a home, white picket fence and all that... only reason to lose the weight is because the doctor says you should. Sometimes that isn't enough motivation.
As for the AA thing, it is something like that. Someone by PM recommended Overeaters Anonymous to me and I have dropped in a few times. It amazed me how many thin people like myself were in the group.... people that had been addicted to food and are dealing with that addiction the same as any drug. I swear, pizza is like crack cocaine to me. I desire it at every moment of my waking life. Just this last Monday I bought the Pizza Hut Panormous Pizza and ate the whole thing in 20 minutes and wanted more. I had to run half-marathons on Tuesday, Friday and this morning to burn off that pizza. Was 20 minutes of pizza worth 6 hours of running? Not really... but I couldn't help myself. I'm addicted.
