He compounded his mistake by not firing Schneider around the end of May. He was/is gone really unless the Jays would've won 2 or 3 rounds of playoffs, so why watch the team burn the season away slowly under a nice guy, players manager who can't get what he needs out of his players.

At least making the first change to show that you're trying...it may have given the team a new manager bump, baseball is a funny game and dynamic especially with all the moving parts, but a manger bump may have worked to get things started again, who knows.

If it didn't it would be where things are at today. Self preservation for Atkins by firing Schneider or not; if the Jays win Atkins looks good for making the call to fire early enough for the roster to bounce back...if they fail he takes the blame he was going to have to take anyway.

All around mismanaged season. Player wise they rode a guy like Richards into the ground, who was excellent for the first 70+ games...same with all the starting pitchers. They were pitching with the intensity of playoff games for 3 months because they could only give up 2 runs or less.with the crap offense, and now they are shells of the players they were 2 months ago, confidence wise.

Hate to quote a long quote only to say a little, but I don’t know if Schneider is a players coach. Publicly he never insults guys, which all in all is probably a good career move. But he wears his annoyance on his face. He can’t hide it and he gets red. So behind the scenes is he giving it to some of them? I’d guess so. I’m very indifferent to him. Batting coach Martinez, not performing. Atkins, 9 years putting this shallow team together, with little prospect pool. To me it’s been glaring the past couple seasons the problem is almost definitively Atkins. The time to dump him was last summer but they wanted to show solidarity during the Ohtani pursuit. I’m shocked the media continues to give him a pass because of the Ohtani pursuit. He didn’t have a plan B. And he had 9 years and only put this together. That’s horrible.

Not firing the manager and batting coach is what's baffling to me.

Trades are hard to make...I get that. And really beyond Ohtani there wasn't much available in free agency you even wanted. Maybe just Bellinger with his 9 HR and .269 BA this year...but IKF actually looks like a better signing than him...but Bellinger over Turner would have probably been nice even if it's an overpayment right now.

But how do you not fire the coach and hitting coach in May. That seemed like an absolute home run and easiest decision they could have made all season.

Where I disagree slightly is the backup offseason plans. This team doesn’t have enough depth. One batter like Ohtani, wasn’t going to solve their problems. It’s been years in the making. So even if they didn’t get Ohtani, would anyone else have solved their problems? Nope. There’s a depth issue. That’s all Atkins. Shapiro gets a pass, probably too generously if he was tied up with renovations. But Atkins has to go.
