San Jose has the Oilers 1st round pick this year from the Walman trade. It is top-12 protected.

My thinking is that the only way to get the 1st unprotected is to take Nurse. I would do almost anything for that pick as I think it will be a lottery pick. I think Calgary would absorb the nurse salary with no issue whatsoever. Also, the 2nd round pick this year could be a top 40 pick.
Imagine 2028... Pissy Drai is the Oilers Captain and the flames own their pick. Would be glorious.

Could absolutely see them trading their 2027 1st round pick to Nashville for O’Reilly this year. It would be such an oilers move to overpay for another forward and ignore their defence and goaltending. They also have a history trading with Nashville.

their bottom 9 look like a line up of a team doing a rebuild. They are a badly built team that has been hemorrhaging assets over the last few years.

I wonder if you could do a deal for the 2026 unprotected on condition that if it is over (and goes to SJ) you get the next year's.

I think they ride out the year at least. This is McDavid's hand-picked guy.
Personally, I hope they stay the course and make zero changes.

It's nearly unanimous amongst Oilers fans right now that the problem solely rests with Knoblauch and Skinner. A new coach and a goalie will suddenly make them Cup Contenders again. Knoblauch is making them play boring, defensive hockey apparently and its neutering the amazing skill on the team.
Not their garbage-tier defense, their non-existant depth, "me first" attitude of their top-2.
They have no identity as a team. They are a hodgepodge of whatever players they could get for cheap to fill in around the massive contracts for Nurse, Bouchard, Draisatl and McDavid. Outside of those 4 and Nuge, what players on their roster were drafted and developed by the Oilers?
When McDavid leaves and the Oilers have plummeted to the basement, it will be one of the biggest failures in professional sports to have failed to win anything after 11-13 years of McDavid.

I am almost feeling bad for Skinner now, having watched a few highlight packs and how glaringly obvious it is that the team continues to be a dumpster fire in front of him. Players routinely walking out into the high slot unmolested, poor clearing attempts and nobody gaining proper position or leverage on checks in front of the net. McDavid is one of the worst offenders too.
So easy for soiler fans to blame everything on the goalie when it is just obvious that nobody is interested in doing the little things that win games.

It wouldn’t shock me to see him go somewhere else and turn into a serviceable goalie. Dubnyk 2.0

Skinner has a bit of a weak glove hand, but IMO he's a standard goalie. Definitely not the problem they claim.

The game on Saturday doesn't go into OT without him in the second when Carolina was all over them.

Always the Oilers press blaming the guys who are roster fillers and the goalies.

Most of those guys are decent if they are on another team in a better role.

But that is the point, they don't see the ice in Edmonton. Draisatly and McDavid are on the ice for 40% of the game. Those guys may be decent on other teams but when they have sat for 10 minutes between shifts you can't expect them to produce.

As mentioned in the trade rumours thread if the Flames trade Kadri, Andersson, and Coleman for prospects and picks with limited salary coming back the team will struggle to hit the cap floor in the coming years. Securing a guy like nurse will help us stay above that line for the next four seasons and also reduce how many bad UFA overpaid contracts we sign. Regardless of this hypothetical trade Flames will have to take on bad contracts in some of the trades we make this year.
The sentiment around here is that we fill the roster with the recent draft picks and journeymen AHLers. That means going forward the Flames need to take on a few boat anchor contracts to balance out the ELCs/$1mil contracts that first year NHLers are paid to, again, reach that cap floor. Cap is projected to be $113.5mil in the 27/28 season. Nurse's $9.25 will only capture 8% of that so will be easier to stomach as the years go on.
Added benefit is that Nurse is bad and will help the tank/accumulation of high picks.

saving the Oilers from Nurse is the last thing the Flames should do

Nurse has a No-Movement clause. I read somewhere he was approached about it last off-season and said no. I can't see him wanting to come to Calgary.
And the feeling is mutual. Calgary does not want Nurse or to help out the Oilers by solving one of their problems.
