I was looking at some of the faceoff leaders among centres and noticed that Jordan Staal is right up there. If Carolina were to retain some salary, what do people think of a Backlund-Staal swap?? Obviously Staal is overpaid and doesn't have the offense to justify his contract, but... he's 6"4, fantastic on faceoffs, physical and a solid shutdown centre (contract aside, that's what you need in a 3rd line centre). Seeing how faceoffs and our AWEFUL PK are a huge part of this team's struggles, it seems like that could be a potential match. Perhaps I'm reaching a bit, but it would be a breath of fresh air to have someone who can win faceoffs on a regular basis. I'm tired of wasting powerplays chasing the puck after a lost faceoff.

Value isn't even close. Like you said, Staal is a big, physical, shutdown f/o guy. Backlund is none of those.

I think J.Staal would be a great add at %50 retained. He would be a great mentor for the younger Centers, helping teach faceoff skills. Also a change of scenery may be good for him. I think he would be a perfect mentor for Monahan in particular.
J.Staal %50 retained for Backlund would be an interesting deal.
A bigger deal would help both teams more, I think. If you target J.Staal and Skinner. What would the cost be? Backlund, prospect and a 2nd? Flames add?

The incentive is for Carolina to move an overpriced player who doesn't fit in with their obvious rebuild. He and Eric have both been in the rumourmill of late. He's not a cherished franchise player and I don't think it would take a lot to acquire him because of his contract (Backlund + I guess?).

Carolina is not going to retain any salary. It's just not happening.

I believe Staal has a NMC. I don't see him moving away from the East Division being that he was born in Ontario and has played his whole NHL career in the East.
Plus coming to a struggling, rebuilding place like Calgary where he wont be the top guy (pending on Monahan and Bennett) isn't very attractive either..

Plus, I'm sure they can trade Staal for more than just Backlund. AND they have to retain salary to boot? Not a realistic trade IMO.

I remember a couple years back someone on CP suggested the idea of the Flames and Oilers swapping 1st round picks (2014 draft I think), and the idea of that has been intriguing.
Like the idea of the Flames cutting off at ties with any reward of a 1st round pick. This way the Flames have nothing to gain from playing bad and should be more motivated to win then. And I'm pretty sure real Flames fans would find it way more rewarding with the Flames playing great hockey/lower pick vs Flames playing bad hockey/ higher pick.
Id say it's high risk, high reward depending on if the Flames can play better than who ever they trade with. At this point maybe (Edmonton?) Toronto, Columbus, or Carolina.

There is not a chance of getting Stall for Backlund, let alone 50% retained Staal.
He's one of those guys that doesn't have to put up points to be effective.

Oh man, I would LOVE for this to go down. And not just because of the obvious benefit to the Flames. What a way to heat up a rivalry! And a perfect cure for tanking.
They should do this with every team, each year. Pair em up with the closest team in the standings and swap next season's draft picks. You'd have a new rivalry each season. And because you're still getting the draft pick of the team closest to you in the previous year's standings, you'd still, in theory, be getting the help through the draft that you need to be competitive.

Carolina will be looking at buying out Staal next year. IF they retained salary and could get a decent player back, it'd be good for them. It would have to be more than just Backlund though.

It looks like Chris Kreider is falling out of favour in NY. Wonder what it would cost to get him.

Weird. I wonder why?
6'3 220+ lbs, and is a pretty good skater.
24 years old, would be a great fit IMO
