Stan is going to be 39 on his next birthday and there's very little tread left on his tires, I'm afraid. It's likely time for him to hang up his racquet, but he's had a fantastic career.

Retirement is difficult for top level athletes as they must face losing their identity and starting a complete new way of life. I hope that Stan can find peace as it seems his body is telling him it's time.

Felix starts his title defense in Basel with a 6-3 6-2 win over Swiss wildcard Leandro Riedi. BVDZ is Felix's opponent on Thursday.

On the topic of guys who should probably be looking to retire, I present Andy Murray. It's amazing that he continues to play with a metal hip and he's still competitive, but his body just can't handle the marathon matches that he usually ends up playing. I think he likely wants to play one more Wimbledon and there is the Paris Olympics next year as well, but he'll be 37 by the time those events arrive.

The young kid Alexander Shevchenko is on a nice run in Basel - First he takes out Stan and just not he sent Taylor Fritz packing 6-7 7-6 7-6.

Fritz won 10 more points than Shevchenko yet still lost the match - That stings especially when he's trying to make the ATP Finals. That 0 for 15 on break point chances looms large.

It has to sting for Fritz to have a service day like that and still lose the match.

Casper Ruud joins Taylor Fritz on the sidelines as he loses to Dominic Stricker also in a 3rd set tie-break.

Felix into the quarter-finals in Basel as he dispatches BVDZ 6-4 6-2. Seeing some positive signs and body language from Felix this week along with much more consistency from his ground strokes. He gets Shevchenko on Friday who is riding high after beating Fritz earlier today.

Encouraging that he's starting to string some wins together after a brutal stretch. He can't afford to lose 75% of these points he's defending so he better keep it up or he's going to tumble down the rankings.
Crazy to see he only made 3 UE's, 2 DF's and approached the net 18 times in this match against the BVDZ. This is a blueprint for success even if the unforced errors come up slightly.

103 titles (second only to Jimmy Connors) - That's incredible.

Bweh just delivered a breadstick to Zverev - Keep it going, Andrey!
Edit: It took some time, but Bweh moves into the semi-finals in 3 sets. Happy Friday everyone!!

Felix is coming up shortly - If he can win today, he gets Holger on Saturday.

Three games in and bad Felix has started the match - Routine rally balls are being sprayed long or wide. Let's wait and see if he can find some form.
Edit: Felix did find some form and played much better for the remainder of the first set and ends up winning it in a tie-break (7-2 was the tie-breaker score).

Felix and Alex Shevchenko need a 3rd set. One break of serve was the difference.

Felix digging deep and Shevchenko blinks serving for the match at 5-4 in set 3. We play on at 5-5. It looked like Felix jammed his knee slightly as he won an incredible point at the net. Stretching out his leg.

Felix takes the match winning the third set tie-break 7-1. That was some pretty clutch tennis from FAA late, great to see. Hope the knee is okay and that he can play tomorrow against Holger.
