Why on earth did Spain switch jerseys after the game?

As for the officiating in this game, it was a brutal, just because it was better then some of the other crap doesn't mean it was good. You could tell after 3 minutes it was going to be floptastic because the ref was eating everything up.

I thought Spain was the better team and deserved the win though. I actually fell asleep during extra time and missed the goal it was such a great game....
I dozed off a couple of times too. Spain are godawful boring. I hope that's their legacy of this WC.

1-0, 1-0, 1-0, 1-0 SNORE!!!

If this had been Germany or especially Italy they would have been crucified for being boring and diving so I hope Spain gets that treatment too. Fair is fair.

No way. The Dutch played like idiots. If they controlled their emotions a little bit and stopped with their brutal challenges, they had a good chance to win. There's no way you can blame the ref for all their yellow cards (and the red). They were as undisciplined as it comes.

Yup agreed. I said before get better refs. Or even two refs.
Players could never pull this carp with the good refs in past tournaments.
Webb is an awful ref, everyone knows it.

I agree the dutch were undisciplined but the ref was a moron, in the first ~20 he gave out 5 yellows, 3 to the dutch and 2 to spain, 3 of those were pretty damn weak, really only the 1 hard tackle by the dutch player and the boot to the chest by De Jong I think it was needed to be called.

Well arguably those 2 you mention by the dutch could've been red cards, so it seemed to me he was giving yellows out to maintain some control of the game. There were a lot of late challenges at that point of the game.

Except Igottago... Man, many of those challenges there was little to no contact on Spanish players. The Dutch tried to be aggressive and every time the spanish players would drop like they got shot. They should be ashamed playing with a strategy involving a clearly biast ref.

I think that's a bit of a exageration, the boot to the chest easily could have the other not so much.

As for giving out yellows to maintain control, biggest bunch of BS ever. I've never seen a sport be it hockey, soccer, football where giving out cards/penalties like candy helps maintain control of the game, the only thing it does is frustrate the players and make them more emotional. Almost every time things spiral out of control.\\

Do you seriously think that game was dirty enough to necessitate 12 yellow cards? Freaking ridiculous.

So why bother watching the next World Cup? Soccer isn't the sport that interests you so watching it in 2014, 2018 or whatever, it'll frustrate you more!
because with all the advertising, sportscenter coverage, and the fact that a few of my coworkers are soccer fans (who watch on the office TV), it's pretty much impossible to avoid when world cup season rolls around. you don't get that with horse racing or any other sport in Canada except hockey. i'm just glad it's only ever 4 years

I don't like Webb either but you really cannot blame him completely for everything that went on in that match. The Dutch were as undisciplined a team as I've ever seen, seriously. They were just begging to get carded. Webb actually could have pulled the card out more, to both sides it has to be said.

I actually thought that was a tough tough match to referee, regardless of the ref,

The most annoying part was not the reffing, but actually the sound of (Nigel Reed??) sucking wind through his teeth.

Yuck.

I guess but you can avoid it. I avoid the Stanley Cup playoffs some years when i think it's crap. It's hard to just pick up something every 4 years not knowubg the players or the teams. I invite you and everyone to join us this league season. There will be alot of games on tv on sportsnet and tsn this year.

We should make a couple of threads soon

to me didn't look offside at the time of release on the first pass, but don't have a PVR to check again, but either way the ball never got there so its a point of no argument.

the actual goal was NOT offside which we both agree on.

and I said one of the better games that i saw officiated in this world cup, no where am i saying it was a good, just better than the other crap

missed them due to having to travel between places, I missed a fair bit of games so that's probably why I missed some of the better called games

Anyway, onwards and upwards. Great thread, people. Lot's of great contributions here from posters on a hockey board no less! I go to a lot of Footy message boards and this thread was one of the best out there.

Kudos to you all.

See you in the World Cup thread in 2014.

I actually thought that was a tough tough match to referee, regardless of the ref,
He should have carded the major fouls more and let the little things go. So in the end every little foul meant the same and everything WAS a foul. Players will dive more when they know the ref will fall for it.

By trying to control the game the players became frustrated and out of control.

This is a game played by men (I would think) and they don't need protection from the ref for every little thing. It's the World Cup Final!

-----

Don't know if it was mentioned but Diego Forlan won the Golden Ball!
