Game isn't over, he got a penalty, sent a message. Should he just let the kid score? What about +/- and goal differential???? Ok, the last 2 examples were garbage but everyone who plays against the Panthers will now be worried about Sam either scoring on them, or killing them.
The only bad thing about it is that he isn't wearing a Flames jersey.

No question his absence has really hurt the ability of this team to win hockey games.

That was an intense hit.
It was violent, so I immediately thought it was dirty, but watching the replay, I don't know if it was. The Columbus player had just shot the puck, Bennett glided into him and didn't catch his head. Bennett maybe got the elbow up a little, after the initial contact.

It's illegal because of the distance traveled to make the hit

That’s the majority of body checks. I know we have had this discussion before. IMO full speed open ice checks on a puck carrier are more dangerous, by quite a margin, than finishing a check along the boards on someone who got rid of the puck before contact. IMO it’s those latter hits that define a physical style of hockey that is less dangerous and actually leads to scoring chances.
I respect your view on this and you have certainly conceded you are outside the mainstream. But I think you’re barking up the wrong tree insofar as making the game safer. IMO

That's it? I was expecting something a lot worse after reading some of the reactions on here.

Alright, I'll weigh in.
As a hit goes, it's 100% clean, but he did track him back halfway across the rink, so I guess I understand calling it a charging penalty in some sense, but Bennett was gliding for 3 seconds before he hit him. It's not blind side, he hits him in the chest/shoulder, and he doesn't jump up or anything. It's just a mean and rough hit, and a young kid got blow up because he was assuming he wasn't going to get blown up at that point in the game.
The penalty is called to defuse the situation. I don't really mind that, but let's not pretend that a hit like that at any other point in the game or a tie score would warrant a penalty call. It's game management. Fine, so be it.
I feel like we've lost an appreciation for hard, but legal hits in the game. That's a play to not only prevent an empty net goal, but also send a warning to the other team to not take you lightly and don't assume anything.
That kid had zero awareness, and that's why he got hammered. Perhaps he'll have a little more sense the next time and at least avoid a hit or try to protect himself. It's still part of the game, so let's not make some bogus argument because it was a particularly violent hit.

You tell him! You owned that argument. Just hope he doesn't counter with the fact that Bennett's value to this team wasn't really about regular season. Otherwise strong rebuttal!

The other thing about the hit is that it set up a potential odd man rush the other way - FLA was actually poised for a 5 on 3 rush when it got whistled down.

If one of the Flames can Bennett one of these Canucks in the final minute, that would be great

Rather him not be suspended vs. the Oilers, seen less get a game though

Oh for the halcyon days when Nobody had an issue with a hit like this.

Gotta say I dream about what Bennett would have looked like after a year or so with Sutter. Beauty hitter and isn’t shy about it either, fine line no doubt with that hit but Sillinger should know better with a guy like Benny on the ice who’s known to be a late game hitter. Nothing is given easy in this league and it’s still a contact sport, as hard of a hit that was I think a suspension for it is a bit much.

If the opposition coach didn't have an issue with the hit then neither do I. It was probably unnecessary but it's 6-3 and they already got an empty net goal so you may want to keep your head up when trying to run up the score as it's not like Bennet blindsided him as Sillinger had to see him coming.

I absolutely love Sam Bennett. What a hit. Play to the whistle.
