No, it has been open most of the summer. I believe the first 30kms or something like that are open.

It can be accessed via goat creek or buller (which I am unsure as to where this is).

There are pics of the trail on trail forks or check out mtb trail reports: Calgary area mtn bikers on facebook as several folks there have ridden this trail.

Buller Mtn parking lot is 31.4km down 742 from the Nordic Centre turn.

I was up in Buller Pass a couple of weeks ago, and decided to just head down and check out a bit of the HRT before heading home. Looks great! I can't wait to ride it.

Is 742 gravel or paved?

Map link because it is huge:
http://kananaskisblog.com/HRTrail/maps/HRTNorth.jpg

So we parked at Goat Creek and headed south. Trail is decent for the first bit then turns into basically a narrow road with a nice boardwalk section through a swampy area, then some roadway until the dam. You cross there, then pick up single track that follows the lake until the boat dock. This section has some loose rock sections, hopefully when the trail settles in it improves. Past Driftwood you cross the highway and start climbing. Not my favourite section as it is more loose rock. There are lots of dips on the climb that don't give it a good rhythm. I'm not sure this section was actually built by someone who builds trails, or knows good trail building practices. Suddenly though, I think someone new took over because you start descending down a really nice section of bermed switchbacks until you hit the road again at West Wind Pass hiking trail. This was where we turned around, as I was with my dad, who is closing in on 70. He doesn't ride a lot of single track, but did OK. I'm not sure I'd bring my wife on this trail though.

Overall impressions of what we rode are decent, but the loose rock sections make it unsuitable for people who aren't confident, which is a bit of a shame. Hopefully they fill with dirt and solidify a bit. Signage is good, not great. Look for the coaster sized white Trans Canada Trail markers. The map I posted above is on several posts along the way.

I'll probably try it again with my hardcore friend who will destroy me, but we should make it further. Arranging a shuttle would be the best option if you want to ride the whole thing. If you just want the single track you wouldn't miss much by starting at the dam.

Oh, bring along a fast friend to ride in front to clear spider webs. My handle bars were absolutely covered with them. And my face. Ugh.

I haven't biked much since the PGAMO. I went for a short ride on Saturday and the pain in my knee became unbearable after 2 kms. I went to the doctor and instead of a strained hamstring, he's now worried it's cartilage damage or a torn MCL. I'm going to get an MRI soon and see what's up. Very frustrating.

Sooo I guess I'm getting fairly strong if I've reached the point where I can rip the derailleur apart by just pedalling....

I would assume this is a warranty issue.

Spoiler for size
Spoiler!

That sucks! I've done that before - it was from the hanger moving too far down and hitting the spokes. Ugly mess.

From what i can see the master link in the chain popped open and got caught in the pulley system which caused me to pull it apart. Im still surprised that the metal mounting point actually sheared instead of another part in the system.

^I'm scared of master links for that reason. I just buy a bunch of extra pins.

I think the shop I got to said it's actually designed that way so that the frame doesn't crack/bend instead.

Yup, ive been told be a few people now that is the case. Still its about a square cm of aluminum that had to be torn apart, thats some decent force

ugh - so my thunderbolt developed an annoying creaking in the pedal/BB area.

I took apart the pedals (and of course had some difficulties getting the pedals apart thanks to a tiny stripped allen bolt) and cleaned and greased them. No difference, swapped pedals - no difference.

took the bike to my LBS - they pulled upart the bottom bracket and the bearsin there are smooth like butter. They put in some spacer on the drive side and adjusted the BB bearing pre-load. Tested it at the shop, all good. Get the bike home, go for a spin and creaking sound is back. will have to ride it as is for the weekend and then take it back on Sunday afternoon....ugh!!!

My Rocky Element was doing the same thing. Turns out it was the suspension pivot bushings were loose. Did you check those? It would start creeking about 10 minutes into the ride. At first I thought it was my headset, then BB, then I figured I'd just tighten every bolt and found the bushings were the culprit.

It is my understanding that the thunderbolt has bearings, but I will look at that.

Although now that I think about it, the sound only occurs when pedalling, and not cruising/bouncing on the bike.
