This gets stated all the time, but read this site from an actual NHL agent, it makes a difference for sure but just saying "but taxes" makes people as stupid as Brian Burke. https://gavingroup.ca/lifestyle-rankings/

Futa mentions a couple of things here. If I heard right, Eichel apparently wants to go to NYR. Buffalo probably doesn’t want to send him there.
He says Anaheim is in it. And he wouldn’t be surprised if a team like Calgary who is trying to change their chemistry is in it
|
Really Jack?
Don't be lame. New York sucks!

If Eichel gets fed up with not winning or not getting to have his medical treatment, or changes to Coach and GM almost every year, or we become a bottom 3 team for that entire time?
He didn’t request a trade because he wants to be a Ranger, far from the reason.

A. It was a million dollar difference per year for Stone.
B. Players don’t generally tax plan, and agents don’t either.
C. You can’t easily tax plan against a trade.

Yes that's true.
Although, most of them probably grew up as every day Americans.
Look, if an American player has a 20 team NTC, I'm sure for most, Calgary is on that list. Their ok teams probably include their home town and/or childhood favorite team. Maybe some cities close to where they or their parents live. Maybe one that's close to their summer home and then a few of the top contending teams. But if a trade were to happen with the Flames, especially when they want to leave their team at all costs, I'm fairly confident they wouldn't block that trade either.
Like one of my friends wanted to GTFO of Bakersfield, CA. So he applied to jobs in his preferred cities, LA, Tampa, Miami, SF then an opportunity came up in Arizona and he jumped on it. Phoenix wasn't his first choice, but he's happy there now and wouldn't want to leave.

The allure of huge cities without a nice climate evades me. Unless there are interesting natural landforms nearby that allow for recreation/exploration.
Flat/somewhat hilly concrete human jungles that are overcast more than half the time.. no thanks.

Then don't mention taxes in a discussion again if nobody tax plans.

To each their own I guess, I enjoy very large cities - though I found NYC to be a bit too large for my liking. I find that my favorite places are larger than Calgary, but smaller than Toronto.
It's all personal preference though. Same as climate. I find most of the cities in North America with "nice" climate really only have nice weather for like 3 months of the year. The rest of the year is usually way too humid/hot, rainy, colder than Calgary, windy or straight up hurricane weather.

I know, but they should ahead of a bunch of their factors (rent, groceries, restaurant prices, etc) which are of minimal importance to a 20-30 year old making millions. There’s a reason restaurant prices are lower in, say, Winnipeg versus NYC. I doubt safety is a concern either.

Huh? I was not talking about Eichel.
I was replying to the post that said ‘inactivity’ not just Eichel
But you are right, I know nothing about that but that can be said for everyone here unless you work for Treliving….hmmm

I don't know, I just played around with the tax tab on that site and for a guy making $10m a year (like Eichel) its over $1m a year to play in a few US places as compared to Calgary. It's easy to say "well you have $10m, so who cares!", but you know who actually cares? The guy paying an extra million in taxes.
It's a factor for sure, and I have no idea how people could think it's not.

You said his inactivity came down to ...
"Either he wants too much or the Flames players do not have as much value as people think"
Plenty of other possibilities if you don't live on the dark side of every single issue.
Think my track record of not stating things as fact that aren't is pretty solid, thanks.

If I was a young guy, I'd love to live in and play hockey in NYC. What an experience. If Jack wants to go there, I don't blame him at all. NYC rocks.

Yeah, IMO NYC is one of the greatest places to live. It’s dense but it’s not like you can’t get away pretty quickly to other areas from there. And the NYC advantages get even better when you have dough. Vegas too, for that matter.
I also get the attraction SJ has for older players. Nice family areas with relative anonymity.

If Eichel makes it public that he wants to go to New York it gives Buffalo even more reason to send him to a place like Calgary

I think it's pretty clear that Eichel does NOT want to go to Buffalo.
