A formula that takes the number of shot attempts and the level of danger per shot attempt to derive what the expected number of goals would be given historical results.
If you have a higher goal rate than expected you are either lucky, or have a better finish rate than the average player.
You'd expect to see highly talented players exceeding those numbers but the top 20 in that stat (GF - xGF / 60) has a few that you wouldn't expect too.

Edmonton population is under a mill unless you count the surrounding area - but I quibble. Ft. Mac is not a lot over 50k, so yeah I guess.
Never thought of it that way though.

Using OECD definitions, pretty easy to say Edmonton is either the most northern metropolitan area in NA, or even going down a size-rung, the most northern medium-size urban area in NA...
Personally, I just call it the biggest dumpster in North America!

There are cities larger than Edmonton, further North in Europe and Russia. Ex. Saint Petersburg (5.6 M), Stockholm (2.2 M), Minsk (2.0M), Copenhagen (1.7 M), Novosibirsk (1.6 M), Helsinki (1.3 M), Oslo (1.2 M).

The quote is equally true up to about 150k if I am not mistaken, so it's immaterial. North America's north is ridiculously sparsely populated. Something like 90% of Canadians live within 500 k of the US border.
The only more populated northern urban centres in the world are in Russia. Helsinki too but Edmonton is actually catching up to it in terms of population. Still way back of St. Petersburgh and Moscow though!

Edmonton is on the 53rd parallel so any city north of this line of note.

Actually roughly crunching the numbers, it is possible IMO that more people live in Edmonton and region than the rest of Canada north of 53 degrees combined.

NHL Trade Rumors

Tough times for Oiler goalies past and present these days
Tommy Salo convicted and sentenced to prison for drunk driving
2021 is off to a rough start for Edmonton Oilers goaltenders, it now appears the bad luck is turning it's attention to former goalies as well. Former Oiler and Olympic Gold Medalist Tommy Salo has been convicted for aggravated drunk driving and sentenced to two months in prison in his home country of Sweden.
The incident occurred on August 11th, 2020, when Salo crashed his car into the middle railing on the E18 highway near Koping in Sweden. Police arrived at the scene to find Salo sleeping in his car and was later found with a blood/alcohol level of 3.06%. According to several Swedish news outlets, Salo told police that he "stopped while driving several times by the roadside to take shots."

Top table added Jan 18th 2021. 1047526 in 2020. Not including Fort Sask, Spruce Grove, St Albert, Leduc, Beaumont, or Leduc, Strathcona, Sturgeon or Parkland counties.
The Edmonton metro area broke 1 million back in 2003-4, bottom table added May 2019.

The crazy thing about Melbourne being the southernmost city over a million people is that its latitude is roughly the same as San Francisco in the northern hemisphere.
Think about how many big cities there are in the US and Canada that are north of San Francisco, not to mention virtually every major city in Europe.

I lived in Edmonton when Khabibulin got arrested in AZ for his DUI. The radio guys got a breathalyzer and tried to match his high score, got absolutely slurring hammered, and weren't even close.
