All I've heard today from Oilers fans and the media, is that the Oilers have played great hockey, and they're the better team. Its a lie, and a big lie, Sure the Oilers have had more shots, and they've had more "scoring chances", though the Panthers right now own the middle of the ice, and own the boards and don't allow silly things like rebounds. But even without the fancy stats, the super awesome hockeytron 10000, can look at the basic stats and see, that the Oilers are generously the second best team on the ice.
Lets take note of a few things.
the PP, the big advantage for the Oilers through the regular season and into the playoffs, have been one of the biggest reasons for success. Conventional d'uh wisdom says if you shut down the Oilers play, they're not a scary team. Guess what, the Panthers are perfect.
Give aways, the bane of every coach. If you give away the puck, it leads to 5 alarm scoring chances against you, and it completely disrupts your offense and your breakouts. While guess what, the Panthers are killing the Oilers there.
Take aways, another disruption, and we've seen that the Panthers' are wizards at taking away the puck , and going to the counter punch.
Hits, over a series wear teams down, its science. We'll the Panthers are the more physical team, and I expect we're going to see the effects of that tonight.
Face offs, a huge stat, especially if your winning in your own end and not letting teams set up. Guess what, yup, the Panthers are better.
The 3-0 series line is the biggest indicator. The Oilers top 6 has gone home in this series. in competitive time the Oilers have scored 3 goals in 3 games, When the Panthers went to prevent the Oilers scored 2 when the game was basically our of reach. Meanwhile we've seen that the Florida's top 6, are just dominating on both ends of the ice. so to sum up
Special teams Florida >Edmonton
Goaltending Florida >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Oilers
Blue line Florida >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Oilers.
Bottom 6 forwards >>>>>> Oilers
Top 6 Forwards Florida>>>>>>>>>>>>Oilers
Physicality Florida>>>>>>>>Oilers
Attention to details (protecting the puck, face offs) Florida >>>>>>>>>>>>>>Edmonton.
So I'm going to say no, the Oilers are not the better team, Yes the Oilers deserve where they are now. No the refs aren't screwing the Oilers, yes The Oilers are going to lose.
I'd like to close off by thanking the crack team of NHL programs who created the hockeytron 1000, especially considering that its platformed on a Commodore Vic 20.
