This is a relief as the evening session matches tomorrow will be quite good! Looking forward to the action!

Yeah, the matches look pretty good on Friday. Kicking things off with Ben Shelton vs. Arthur Fils (two young, exciting players) is a great matchup.

Leylah and Sofia Kenin are going to a 3rd set - Kenin won the first set 6-4 and Leylah just won set 2 in a tie-break coming back from 4-1 down in the tie-break to win it 8-6 (Kenin double-faulted to give Leylah set 2).

Some fabulous tennis in that set, and also sloppy. The tie break was a mess. Leylah looks really goid

That backhand drive volley she missed serving at 5-3 30-15 that she dumped in the net I thought was going to be her undoing, but she regrouped just in the nick of time and Kenin helped her immensely in that tie-break.

That's at least four times in this match that Leylah has taken a ball out of the air when she should have let it bounce. She ultimately lost the point and got broken when she had an easy putaway if the wold have let the ball bounce.

She just did it again (dumped a ball in the net that she should have let bounce) and this was on break point.
Edit: Leylah avoids the bagel in set 3, but a long way back as Kenin is serving at 5-1 in set 3.
Edir 2: Kenin serves it out to take the match 6-4 6-7 6-1. Leylah got out to a bad start in set 3 and just couldn't recover, tough conditions out there today, very hot and Kenin appeared to have more in the tank than Leylah.

Better news for Canadians in Columbus though as both Alexis and Vasek won their matches earlier today and are into the quarter-finals.

Who would ever coach a swinging volley as the default on a high short ball? It just feels like such a high difficulty shot for the chance that you might catch the opponent not yet fully back in position. Waiting seems like it should be a way better percentage play even if the other player can reset.

Anybody else make the trip out?
To be honest it was in poor taste for Monfils to call out the line judge like that. The poor guy was probably already a bit mortified that he missed two calls. I know Gael was just trying to be a bit cheeky but you don't need to get right up next to the guy and make him feel uneasy. He took it well though, he was stoic like a British guard.

I made the trip in from Vancouver Island, but my wife and I only attended the Friday afternoon session. I thought the tennis was pretty darn good, Shelton brought the heat in the opening match and Francisco was on fire in match 2. Didn't see the Felix - Gael fireworks last night.

Team World up 8-2 with the doubles left to play on day 2. Pretty much a must win match for Team Europe going into day 3.

It's 10-2 for Team World after day 2 as Felix and Ben team up to defeat Gael and Hubi in doubles.

Nice touch by Johnny Mac to put out Milos and Chris Eubanks in the doubles with the competition now over and we switch over to exho mode.

Alexis Galarneau with a good week in Columbus making it to the final before losing to Dennis Kudla. Better news for Marina Stakusic however:
