Expansion draft rules are a tradeoff between what's good for existing franchises and what's good for the new franchise. In past expansions, that tradeoff has been heavily weighted towards what's good for the existing franchises. Bettman has come out and said this expansion draft will be different - he, and presumably the board of governors, want to see the new team stocked with better talent than previous expansion rosters. So of course this is going to tick off most teams.

Which they have already accomplished with the new, tighter rules.
No need to go one step too far and screw some teams.

Maybe so, I was more responding to AB's comment that it was 'only 11' teams and why would the league care.

Well they can always adjust the way they share the money. Throw the Flames some extra dough to offset the buyout cost and they likely keep quiet.

Interesting name:
Jimmy Murphy @MurphysLaw74
Talking to NHL execs & scouts this past weekend & name that repeatedly got linked to #Bruins was Panthers D Eric Gudbranson. 24 yr old RFA

Oh man. Gudbranson would round out the Flames D much in the same way Hamonic would.
Hamonic is more well rounded, but Gudbranson is bigger and would probably be cheaper to acquire.
Giordano - Hamilton
TJ Brodie - Gudbranson

This is another example of where Wideman's contract hurts the Flames. They can't chase Hamonic or Gudbranson without dealing Wideman first. Also, expansion draft would affect this decision too, no?
With the 1RW and 1G to fill and raises for the kids, it would require some BT wizardry to make this happen.

The more I think about it I think the Flames can go out and acquire a guy like Hamonic or Gudbranson and then if there is an expansion draft just go 4-4-1 with protection.
Johnny, Mony, Backlund and Bennett and the 4 D & 1 G.
It gets dicey if the Flames have a forward break out next year, like Shinkaruk or Ferland, but then you just gotta make some deals. No sense in stalling on improving your top 4 defense because of maybes and what ifs. Our top 4 D needs a big shut down guy, so if you can acquire Hamonic Gudbranson, just get it done IMO.

The Flames need to remove D men, not add them. Wotherspoon, Nakladal , Jokipakka and Kulak are all up for the bottom 3 on rotation until one of them cements a spot. Then add wildcards like Culkin, Anderssen and Kylington and there's ample Depth to work with.

These are only a little contradicting.

Yeah the Flames don't look like a team in position to be able to add a defenseman at any salary as there's a log jam right now and one (Wideman for sure please) or two will have to be shipped out or put on waivers.

its hard for me to imagine the Panthers wanting to move Gudbranson. Big, strong, physical, mobile defencemen who can play top 4 are actually much rarer than PMDs these days. I think the Pantgers have a great blend of young defencemen. Only reason to move one of the key ones would be because of expansion protection concerns

No way should the Flames be in the Hamonic, Gudbransen, etc deals. They need to add a goalie and top 6 wingers. If anything the Flames are looking to subtract a Dman or two (obviously the top 3 are not being traded)

No they shouldn't be in on Gudbranson... But mainly because he's not very good. He has the puck skills of Engelland. He should not be in your top 4.

This is not true, he is a decent passer and an absolute beast.

Meh, I'm inclined to agree with Saillias. Gudbranson is an absolute beast in his own end, but a big issue for him is doing more than just dumping the puck out of his own zone. He can skate a little, but he significantly lacks in agility and puck handling ability. He gets by, but it's not pretty most of the time.

No thanks to Gudbranson, we need modern D-men playing a modern system.

Wouldn't the Flames have to lose a Dman to the expansion draft if they acquired Gudbranson or Hamonic?
Either way, no thanks. I respect the game that defensive defensemen play, but our top 4 is solid enough at the moment.
