The Real Gangsters of Boardwalk Empire

I find some of the changes quite odd - why make Meyer Lansky in the show be from Poland instead of Belarus?

And if anyone wants more of a look at the real life gangsters, I highly recommend Ken Burns' documentary series Prohibition.

Pretty great as usual, maybe a tad slow for those who were expecting big things to happen, but premieres are often like that.

Not going to lie though, I had no idea what was going on during parts of the episode. So hopefully they fill us in over the course of the next couple episodes.

I was surprised to see Agent Sawickie. I thought he was killed along with Owen last season?

Fan of this show but the over-the-top violence is getting to me.

Although I can see where you're coming from in regards to the one guy getting massacred with the wine bottle.

THIS.

Pretty sure I've said it before but this show needs recaps at the start of episodes. There's so many story lines going on I can't keep track of who's who. I'm also lost half the time haha. Feel like I need to marathon re-watch last season.

What are you lost on? Outside of Richard's storyline, which I think the writer's are intentionally masking (aside from the fact that he went back to his sister at the end), I thought everything was pretty straight forward.

^ Well there was also the part where Agent Sawicki got set up by his partner (Agent Knox), and was killed as a result. Both that and Richard's storyline need to be delved into soon I hope.

I don't know if there is much left to explain about Knox. New prohbition officer, meant to learn the ropes from Sawicki. Sawicki is corrupt, probably put out some feelers, decided he could do his business in front of Knox. Knox sees Sawicki getting his cut of the bootlegging business, learns from that one bootlegger that he has set up his place with a booby trap (due to theft) and tricks Sawicki into falling right into it. With Sawicki out of the way Knox takes his place as the person to payoff. He's ruthless and probably smarter than people will give him credit for.

Could have something to do with the failed hit on Masseria but I got the feeling that Knox is a new storyline completely.

Weren't Luciano and his friend with Rothstein, then they went to Massaria, then they got set up on the Heroin deal by those guys.

Now they are out of jail and in two separate factions... I have no idea what's going on there.

History will tell you what's going on there if you wish to look into it, but if you don't know already, you might as well watch it unfold.

So haven't seen this thread bumped in a while. We're now midway through the season so I was just curious what everyone's thoughts have been so far. I've enjoyed the season yet once again feel like there's just something missing thats keeping it from reaching its true potential. Too many storylines still strikes me as the biggest issue. Obviously its been awesome having no Margaret until last week, but now odds are she'll be brought back with another pointless storyline. Though if nothing else bringing her back brought us a line of the year candidate with Nucky's "I wouldn't put something alive in a box".

Jeffrey Wright has been killing it as Dr. Narcisse and he needs more screen time. Not sure how we go through two whole episodes without him. The Gillian storyline seems totally pointless right now but obviously her's and Richard's storylines are destined to come to a head. I'm also liking Agent Knox or whoever he actually is, quite the weasel yet a good villain.

Overall its been a solid season and if they can tighten it up in the second half it has a chance to be the best season the show has had.

I'm really enjoying this season so far, just like the other ones. I'm with you in that I enjoyed not having Margaret in the show, and I'm not really sure how they intend to weave her back into the story line.

The thing I like about this show is that I can just sit back and enjoy it. I'm not sure what the "end game" is supposed to be but the characters and story lines are engaging.

It's just fun to watch them be depraved in that setting.

I think this season has been great.

I really liked what they did with Eddie's character. Up until this season he's been a pretty boring background character, but I thought this season explained how his shame and guilt about his past made him so subservient. And then, of course, as soon as he thinks he's overcome it and found a bit of pride, it just pulls him right back in harder than before.

I also enjoyed the storyline about Nucky bailing his nephew out of trouble. I though his motivations and empathy were well explained by that speech he gave him at the end: That burning rage you feel inside you is not a curse, it's a gift, you just have to be sure never to let anyone see it.

Richard has always been one of my favourite characters, but I'm not sure where they're going with him this season. He's at his best when he has that silent, bubbling rage under the surface, but there hasn't been much of that this season at all. I imagine it might come back to the surface when he reencounters Gillian again.

I'm looking forward to what happens with the Luciano storyline now that he's worried about Mazeria. The history of the real man makes me wonder if that's going to come to a head.

This show has always been a slow burn, so overall, I'm pretty happy with how it's going.

Enjoyable season so far and overall a very good show. What keeps it from being a great show in my opinion however, is that Nucky is not a character that people really care about. Tony Soprano, Walter White, Al Swearengen, etc., these are all characters that viewers cheer for and become anxious when they fall into harm's way. Last season was the closest that Nucky came to death and I realized that I didn't really care about him. Some of the secondary characters are excellent, the plot is well crafted, the production value is second to none, it just falls short with Steve Buscemi, who is not a leading man.
