Would an enclosed area like that encourage bums to camp out in there? I dunno, I hope the glass doesn't end up looking like the glass from a lot of bus shelters I see often where they're scratched and have a bunch of frozen spit on them. Glass always looks nice as long as it's well maintained and kept clean.

Bums don't really hang out there. I doubt it would be a problem; they're not going to migrate just for a break from the wind; there are many more nooks and crannies around downtown for that.

Also, the red and white combination will add a bit of warmth to the Calgary landscape in the winter. Plus, it will be a hit with the kids flying into Calgary International Airport during Christmas...

I like how wide and flat it is. It will be much more usable than either two bridges at the C-Train crossing or Prince's Island. I think the restrictions of the height limits imposed by the heli-pad and lack of girder into the river actually inspired a pretty innovative design. I'd rather have this than the typical Calatrava white masts and cables.

From the pictures in the PDF it doesnt look like there glass on the roof. Only upto a hand railing.

I must say I'd rather support this bridge than any workout centre for city hall employees. At least everyone who wants to can enjoy it. I mean, we've spent 20 million on dumber stuff. I think it's actually nice that the city actually wants more innovative designs to diversify downtown rather than the cookie cutter stuff. Maybe that way Calgary can start losing its moniker as the city that fun forgot.

There is glass on the roof. You can definitive see it on at least 5 of the 7 renderings.

I haven't read much of this thread, but I will say that it looks great, and the price tag isn't outrageous. In a city that is void of any architectural beauty, I think it is much needed.

Correction: The current Nexen building, done by Fred Valentine, is arguably the nicest bit of large-scale architecture in the city. 2nd place props go to the M-Tech building on MacLeod. Both are extremely solid in this regard.

And then, I'm not sure. But I am excited about this bridge, and so far lots of people I have spoke to are as well. The only downside may be the exterior color, as it seems a little hokey / cheesy, but those concerns are relatively small.
