Well, at least they're winning. Tied with the Yankees now. I say they should be offering Burnett up around the league for a 30+ HR, 100+ RBI OF.

Right now, Shawn Marcum and Dustin McGowan are our 2 most marketable players for trading. Burnett's salary and inconsistency won't fetch a 30 HR, 100 RBI player. Marcum or McGowan would.
The Jays pitching is their strength, clearly. So do you try to deal one of those guys for a marquee hitter, or just try to ride out the pitching.
Here's an idea for a blockbuster trade, just for fun. Roy Halladay for Chase Utley...

You take that and run for the hills. In 2 years, Halladay will be our #3.

I know we need a bat, but trading away a young pitcher, one that's in the bigs, is not worth it IMO. Wait a little while and likely Adam Dunn or Jason Bay will be available for prospects. Better to go that route.

And Chase Utley?
Lets not forget he is 29 and turning 30 during the calender year.

Looking at that starting rotation right now the only two starters with an ERA under 4.00 are Halladay and Marcum, and Halladay on a bad start still gives you 6+ innings. So I don't think you want to take your front end horse out of that rotation and move the rest of the chain up. Take out Halladay and who's the Jays number one starter? The guy I'm most likely to move is probably McGowan because I think he's similar to AJ Burnett, great stuff but can't seem to keep it together consistantly enough to be more than a good pitcher. Even that's dicey as he's still young, but I wonder if he'll be a teaser like Burnett is.

That's young for a baseball player, especially a hitter.
In two years, our rotation could be: Marcum, McGowan, Litsch, Burnett, Janssen. Whereas Utley would still be our most productive hitter without a doubt.
Not saying I WANT to trade Halladay, he's my favorite Jay, but when you have a position of strength sometimes you have to do want you don't want to.

Why have you included Janssen there? The surgery he had results in less than 5% of pitchers having it ever playing in the big leagues again. I agree in the most literal sense that this "could" be our rotation but as far as I'm concerned you have to consider Janssen gone, anything else being a pleasant surprise.
I also find it terrifically unlikely that Burnett will be with the Jays next year because my understanding is that he controls the rights to his option, so if he wants to opt out because of a feeling he can get more money elsewhere, then he will. I also understand the Jays have some kind of right to opt out but not control the activation of the rest of the contract which means if he does well, he'll opt out to get more money, and if he sucks, the Jays will opt out or whatever.
Then, trading Halladay, you have a Top 3 of Marcum, McGowan, and Litsch, and I don't think there's much behind those three in the system (though I'm not sure).

Nice post. Even though a few years from now, all you are probably correct in saying that Halladay will be the #2, dealing him would be a huge mistake unless you're getting a pitcher back. The whole concept of moneyball was a joke to begin with. Pitching is what wins games, and unless Halladay were to be dealt for a sure fire Ace prospect and an above average bat, he's just not worth dealing away. He's one of the best pitchers in the game, consistent, and an inning eater - nobody in the league can compare to the guy over the last 5 years IMO. Surely you have the occasional pitcher who does well for 2-3 years, but how many guys are like Halladay night in and night out pitching 9 innings and not getting injured. The guy's a horse.

some power by Barajas and some actual run scoring last night! They tried to piss away the lead, but Burnett gets the win with a superbly pitched game.

Jays win again! Back to 500 at 23-23. BJ almost blew a 2 run save with a solo HR followed by a PH double, but in true BJ fashion, he struck out the next guy (I guess if it was true BJ it would have been a 3 called strike strikeout, but i'll take whatever I can get).
MLB gameday is getting better every year, although the delay in between pitches is a nail biter. Boooo Memorial cup on SNET, more Jays (the CBC should have picked it up).
Next up:
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim visit the dome for a 3 game series starting Tuesday.
