Just feels like Roughriders is a good name for a sports team.

The Utah Mormons or Latter Day Saints. Have their uniforms look like a white collared short sleeve shirt with black pants. Instead of names on the back, have name tags that all begin with 'Elder'.

The problem with Utah teams is they tried too hard.

Utah Jazz - there's no Jazz in SLC. They just kept the name from New Orleans.

Real Salt Lake - Couldn't be dumber. Real means 'Royal' in Spanish. Tried to capitalize on the popularity of Real Madrid.

Utah Hockey Club - actually a bit organic and it works IMO. The problem is that people will think they are trying to copy Davos HC like they did with Real Salt Lake.

Lakers did the same thing. Heck, so did the Flames. It's not trying hard, it's just continuity.

When the Hornets moved to New Orleans they kept the name, now it's Pelicans? That seems trying too hard.

The Dodgers are a funny one- the name referenced people “dodging” Brooklyn streetcars, then they relocated to a place soon to be devoid of them. I guess they dodge cars now.

I think there's a real reluctance to use a name already in use by another pro team. I can't think of any new team that has done that in recent memory - all the existing same name teams were formed a long long time ago, before people sued each other a lot for it. The most recent I can think of is the Panthers (Fla and Carolina) and that one's weird because both teams started at the same time. I understand the NFL tried to talk Carolina out of the name.

Rams twice, Raiders twice, A's twice (maybe about to be thrice?). Just don't think it's a big deal. In this case they have to change it because of what was agreed to.

Also not sure why names have to have some local connection now. Are there Tigers and Lions roaming the streets of Detroit? Raptors in Toronto? Royals in Kansas City? Kings in Los Angeles or Sacramento? Bulls and Bears in Chicago (I don't know, maybe some CBOE reference)? Just pick a good name and people will get used to it.

Hey fair enough. Keeping someone else’s name sure worked for us, after all 🔥

Plus you can really ruin something by overthinking it and trying to imbue every nook and cranny with meaning (Kraken mascot, our new arena…).
