I suppose an electrical fire is another option, as the ballast released by the self-dissolving bonds might not be enough to bring it to the surface on its own. Or they could be bobbing around on the surface somewhere.

Yeah...I still find if crazy that they dont have a mechanism for opening the hatch from the inside. So they could be bobbing around the Atlantic on the surface and they still might run out of air.

I think the people on the sub are doing fine and media is just sensationalizing it.
here's a picture inside the sub right now.

Why the F*** doesn't everyone on that sub know that protocol?
That should be something they tell everyone who gets in the thing.

Does anyone know how deep this thing has been down to previously? I don't recall seeing that information anywhere and I can't seem to find it.
I read stories of people who have been on it before, but no mention of the depths it has previously reached.

At least 3000m. One of the company guys took it solo. Interestingly, that's also what they used to calculate life support supply from. One person, not talking, probably less stressed than any passenger would be. It's "rated" to 4000m, bot that's just an engineering/material science estimate, it's never been tested to failure. Nor has it been seriously checked for stress from repeat trips. This is what makes me think it got crushed on the way down. Carbon fibre is essentially a brittle laminate, so repeated stresses could cause small cracks between layers, eventually resulting in a catastrophic failure.

Meanwhile hundreds of migrants die on a ship off Greece and no one bats an eye.

Thanks, I didn't think it had been down that deep before. I was reading that the company that manufactured the porthole would only certify it to 1300m.

At the end of the day human life is still human life whether the people are rich or not. Sure they were afforded luxuries that most people can only dream of and they took risks that seem foolish to many but they still have families and people who care about them.
This is shaping up to be a tragedy and it's poor taste to crack jokes because of their financial status and wealth. I'll probably get roasted for this but I think it's kind of cringe to read this thread and make light of a very serious situation.
I get that going on a non-certified sub was foolish and they were made aware of the risks but it doesn't make this rescue any less depressing as time is certainly running out if not already over.

Sounds like you have a lot of feelings about this bubbling up.
If it makes you feel better, while a human life is a human life, we most certainly only care or have even heard of these ones because they were very rich. In the time they've been out of contact, thousands of people have died in far more tragic ways with far fewer words said about them.
When considering that, it's hard to see this as anything but the least depressing death can get. They all knew the risk of death, and they all happily took it.

The closer this gets to 100% fatality territory the less seriously people seem to be taking it, which is odd.
I know there isn't much sympathy for the ultra wealthy around here but keep in mind that there's a young guy on there who was likely just going along with his dad's foolish idea for privileged leisure.
I feel badly for him most.
