Rhett talked about when he was in Buffalo and they had a big turnover. He said it's tough when you become good friends with guys, then they leave and new people come in. You lose those personal connections and it is hard. Dean mentioned that he had been in work places where there is big turnover and the feeling of disconnect for the people who stay. Especially when you see the people you worked with going on to do better things. I can relate my own life experience to that too. I worked for a company that let a bunch of people go and hired new people. The new people loved it there, but it was never the same for me after that, so I ended up leaving once I could. I think in some ways, it's actually easier to be the new guy, than the old guys.

From Lindholm's perspective, he went from centering the top line in hockey, then seeing both those guys leave for big money, and in Tkachuk's case, to a beach house in south Florida. His production went down as well, so he is probably now second guessing his own value.

In a way, I wonder if it wasn't a mistake to not trade Lindholm and Backlund before this season. This isn't one I'd hold Treliving to as a mistake, because it didn't seem necessary at the time, but when a new core is brought in, I bet it really shifts the mood in the room. The old guard that remains probably feels pretty irritated, and to follow that up with a bad season, likely just cements the idea that they should move on as well.

Lindholm also got nickle and dimmed on his current contract (like the Flames do to all RFA's)... only to then see Chucky and Johnny get monster paydays. AND then 2 new stars come in to Calgary and also get huge contracts.

It sucks, but from these interviews it doesn’t sound like Backlund or Lindholm want to be around. Losing those two would absolutely cripple this roster. Might be tank mode soon.

He still put together a good team and players that would have allowed Lindholm to continue to produce but for obvious reasons that didn't happen.

So there is something going on which is causing guys to to think they are ready to leave and they need to figure it out. Gaudreau and Tkachuk got offered 10.5 million a piece and chose to leave for less money. Now we have 2 more core players no comital to staying. Huberdeau and Weegar signed before playing a game.

So there is an issue and its not just losing your friends and they need to do a deep dive into what is driving players away.
I actually think its very simple. This team does not look like its building towards a being a winner any time soon. So if you are a veteran with the option to explore other opportunities, you are going to do that. Both Backlund and Lindholm have spent years either missing the playoffs or losing early with this team. What reason is there for them to consider staying?

Big Z evolving into a real fan favorite is one of the more unexpected things in the last few years.

Really wouldn't mind having Stecher fill out the D and running with

Weegar - Andersson
Tanev - Kylington
Hanifin - Zadorov
Stecher

Nice to have a Russian player who wants to stay here. Hope it helps with the future bring more guys in.

I am someone who loves the puck skills that a lot of the Russian born players possess and think the Flames lack, so if more puck skilled players want to play here because of Big Z then I'm all for it.

Lindholm also has one of his best friends on the team in Markstrom who he also actively recruited to come here.

We have a nice Swedish contingent of players as well. Last year team was apparently super tight as a group.

I also don't think its Treliving or him nickel and diming anyone all the players rave about him. Plus Lindholm was RFA with some mediocre seasons behind him the contract was fair and he has outperformed it.

I don't think that is the case at all. Lindholm & Hanifin signed quickly after the trade, I don't recall it being a drawn out negotiation. Those numbers were solid at that time for those players given their performance to that date. It was more likely CAR was the party trying to squeeze them.

Of the other contracts you mention, all were UFA except Tkachuk. You can't compare RFA contracts to UFA contracts. Totally different situation.

If Kylington is back I would move Hanifin and try to get some help up front. Stecher can be in the lineup based on his play.

Don’t need to dive too deep to find Sutter. As soon as he re-upped the team nose dived showing their displeasure.
