Except for the fact he stated he wants to stay here. Don't let that cloud your constant negative takes though.

Good point. He would probably be the first player who didn't stay somewhere he said he wanted to stay.

There are plenty of reasons Gaudreau may want to stay (familiarity, possibly building a life here, enjoys playing for the org, relationship with teammates, etc). Hanging your hat on “hE sAiD hE wAnTs To StAy” is the weakest of them all.

Wait a minute. That tweet doesn't make any sense. Tavares plays in Toronto now. How can this be?

It’s not trolling in the least, don’t be so sensitive.
Put yourself in Johnny Gaudreau’s shoes. You like Calgary, but are you really willing to give up anywhere from $5-$10MM undiscounted before tax over say a 7-8 year contract?
That’s what he’s likely deciding here. Do I stay in Calgary and take a haircut of that level.
That’s a lot of ####ing possible money, no matter how much you like a place. It’s not an easy decision, and I don’t blame him one bit for taking his time depending what’s on the table, and every single one of us would do the exact same thing.
He’s not going to say he doesn’t want to be here, because I’m sure he does like it, but money talks and now is the time to cash in. Furthermore, his agent is probably guiding him on his every move, prudently, and that likely includes using your leverage (ie. waiting).

Anybody has a different opinion than mine is trolling…
Seriously, If Johnny had a good year and they pay him right (9M + long term) then he stays
Another bad year, there is no reason for him to stay.
There is no discount, no signing because he loves Calgary etc

It's not even just money. He's going to make a lot of money anywhere he goes. Maybe he just wants a better chance at winning.
What players say in interviews is meaningless pandering. It surprises me that anyone that's watched professional sports for any period of time puts so much weight into it.

The key question is - what team's pajamas did JG wear as a 10 year-old?

Maybe it's negative in your eyes but it's just reality in my eyes. I'm really not that emotionally tied to it. If Johnny wanted to be here that bad I think he would be signed already. The fact he isn't tells me he's gonna take a wait and see approach and testing free agency is likely what he will do. At that time I see there being more pulling him away than drawing him back, but time will tell. Maybe the Flames land Jack Eichel and everything changes. Maybe Sutter has them playing at an elite level. A repeat of last year though without any major player movement and I'm guessing he's gone.

Except it is not reality - we have no idea what Gaudreau is thinking, so there is no reality position to take here.
Your opinion is that he probably leaves, which is fine - you are free to hold whatever opinion you like.
But in this scenario, your opinion is in fact a negative one.

There was a lot of panic/worry on the forum before Gaudreau signed out of college.
There was a lot of panic/worry on the forum before Gaudreau signed his second contract.
There is a lot of panic/worry on the forum now.
I’m hopeful we can find a way to keep him on, but at the right price. There are few players who are as much fun to watch as Gaudreau. The team does need to grow. We have gone backwards over the last few years, as our core has matured. I really hope Sutter is the answer, and is the spark this organization needs

“If Johnny really wanted to be here that bad I think he would be signed already”
I’m not sure why people keep saying this. Landeskog wanted to stay in Colorado but didn’t sign until moments before free agency started.
Gaudreau likely wants to stay in Calgary while also having a big pay day. Both can be true. His agent is likely using all of the leverage he can to get the biggest deal for Johnny. That’s fine, that’s his job. Treliving is likely holding firm on his end as well since there is no immediate deadline to have this resolved.
These types of negotiations usually take a long time and require both parties to move off of their initial positions.
Gaudreau might end up leaving, I’m not denying that’s a possibility, but the fact he isn’t signed yet isn’t proof of anything.

Are you seriously comparing staying in Colorado to staying in Calgary? Arguably the best team in the entire NHL with a lineup that should contend for the Cup for the foreseeable future, compared to a team that didn't make the playoffs last year and has major question marks moving forward. Apples and oranges.

I believe there's a team down south somewhere that would offer to dispute that. They've made it past the second round… something the Flames, but for some reason not the Avalanche, are frequently criticized for failing to do.
