I'm on board with this for two reasons.
Phillips won't make the Flames any better and thereby won't be jeopardizing the high pick.
It would be amusing to see how comically small he is in a real NHL lineup.

I think it's safe to assume Tanev gets protected seeing Treliving just signed him and he was the teams most reliable defenseman this season.

Unless the team is tanking no way you keep Gio over Tanev. I pray we don’t pay assets to keep one year of Gio just out of respect.

And we are talking about 1 year of no Gio (and no $6.75M). He's going to either retire or sign somewhere for super cheap afterwards, maybe Calgary.

If the Flames were more solidly positioned to contend and Giordano was showing minimal regression then management would have some tough decisions. At this point the Flames aren't a playoff team, and Giordano is a minor liability at times. Give the Krak their choice of any number of bloated contracts on the roster and carry on.

Philips is not really any smaller than Kailer Yamamoto:
5'7" 155 lbs v. 5'8" 153 lbs.

This is good return for Bennett.
Six picks in the first three rounds. We will have players come out of this and last year's drafts. (Imo, Kuznetsov & Zary)

You don't have to give them their choice. Just essentially make them choose between Gio or Kylington (or UFA Ryan I guess). None of those really hurt the team.
I agree with the notion that it's bad form to sign Tanev, with an NTC, and then expose him 1 year later.

Boy, that sounds like a spot-on comparison. I imagine it will be something like that, which would be a major win if he pans out.

I'm gonna miss him. But he lost all confidence around halfway into Gulutzan's tenure and never regained it. Hope he becomes that confident, creative player he was early on, once more.

That's crossed my mind as well as it seems like something the Flames would do and it terrifies me.

Exciting news ....guy appears to have a big upside and if he indeed has a high GAF meter he's welcome.
That'll hopefully rub off in a positive way in a locker room desperately needing it

Probably for the best. By most accounts a better draft that will be better scouted

Imagine a scenario where we trade away so many players for picks and prospects that we only have like three or four players we even HAVE to protect...
Wait, is that even allowed? Wouldn't we be forced to make at least one player available?

Tanev's not going to be exposed. If you were to have traded any of those three D today, I would venture to say Tanev would draw rhe greatest return, even with his term. Giordano has been a great Flame, but that ship is sailing at warp speed and Kylington may be something, or not....
Clearly the choices for Seattle will be limited, but if they were to select Giordano, or even Backlund, with their respective term, it doesn't derail anything special.

Not sure what went wrong but he never seemed to be on the same track after being injured his draft year. Sucks he never panned out, always seemed like the missing piece to the Flames rebuild.
