That’s another thing to like about Brodie. He had all the reasons not to come back in the bubble. Pending UFA, eyes looking toward Toronto, health issues, young family....
And he came in and competed super hard and IMO was the Flames best rearguard.
Yup, completely. There was a tweet as well when Brodie mentioned the trade for Kadri last year that fell through so I think it was in the back of his mind, but despite that, the guy came into this season ready and competed like a pro. A really solid person.

#Flames GM Brad Treliving says team was upfront with TJ Brodie’s camp they were trying to sign Jacob Markstrom. Wanted to finalize that before focusing elsewhere.
After Markstrom signed, Treliving says focus shifted to Chris Tanev’s deal with Brodie already signed in Toronto.

Agents sometimes f up the relationship between management and players. I'm sure Brodie's told his team he preferred going home. Nobody should have to explain their situation in this case. I too wish Brodie signed but it's a lot of money for a second pair guy. I don't know how they fill the top player role on D and O still missing from the lineup.
Specifically to the task of playing with Reilly, Brodie is perfectly suited. His play allowed Gio to be more offensive. His defensive game is under-rated. His ability to transition through the neutral zone is elite, as is his skating.
His biggest weakness is in the offensive zone - no shot, and not much vision (carries the puck around and then dumps it in the corner a lot, because he can't find an outlet). But Reilly can take care of that.
Brodie will take care of everything else.
He also makes a really, really boneheaded play on occasion out of nowhere.
Wishing Brodie good luck in Toronto. Solid player overall. Leafs should be happy to have him.
At the start of last season, I was on the “trade Brodie” bandwagon. As the season progressed, I was really hoping we would sign him to an extension. Not in the cards, but am glad he got himself a good contract.
Hopefully the media in TO isn’t too hard on him, since they have to print negativity to get ratings in that market.

Maybe. But fans didn't turn on Barrie and he was pretty bad. I feel like the fans just want a steady partner for Reilly.
I hope he can do it.
It's funny because I joined this site after the Phaneuf trade and now the Leafs have gotten another Flames Dman.
As a Leafs fan I'm hoping this works out better than the Phaneuf period (but by all accounts Phaneuf was a great guy on the team he just never could live up to the expectations)
I actually like Phaneuf the person. He seems like a really good guy and he cared.
Brodie is solid.
He has tools unlike most d-men which makes it harder to see him go.
He will definitely make a few embarrassing miscues over the course of a season but probably not nearly as many as Barrie.
He makes up for it with dynamic skating and puck handling through the neutral zone. One of the better players in the league for 3 on 3. He will have the odd game where he will go beast mode and put up a few points.
Edit: oh also if your coach has done any homework he will play him on the right side.
I’m going to miss seeing Brodie do the reverse plays in the corners where he would whip the puck behind him before pivoting and use the boards to bank the puck back up to himself to quickly generate a good exit all while leaving the player he was escaping in the corner still.
It's a great fan video IMO. Almost all of the clips are from my videos, which I have 120 minutes of footage for Brodie at this point to comb through. He did a great job of choosing not just the obvious goals / primary assists that most tend to use.

Good luck to Brods. Outstanding person and player throughout his time here. Although he had his struggles at times, at the very least he got to go out on a high note. He will be missed without a doubt. GL in Toronto.

Thank you so much for this!! Made me tear up, so awesome. I will miss seeing TJ as a Flame for sure. I am sharing this with my family on Facebook. I so owe you some cookies ♥️♥️

Treliving blew that. Basically told Brodie he wasn’t a priority for the Flames and maybe even showed he has trouble multi tasking.
The Flames may have gotten better in net but they have not gotten better elsewhere. This is a big loss. Gio is in the Norris conversation when paired with Brodie.
I expect they will miss Brodie a lot. Toronto got a great player on a great deal.

It's pretty clear Brodie wanted to play in Toronto. It's not like Brodie and the Flames started talking the day free agency started. I'm sure they had talks previously and both sides knew that it was unlikely he would be staying. Brad focused on one of the biggest fish in free agency and Brodie went and talked to the Leafs. Both sides likely left the door open as neither knew what Toronto would ultimately offer. I don't think Brodie ever really intended on staying unless the Leafs weren't going to offer him something reasonable.

Exactly, for all we know the Flames already offered Brodie a similar deal or as much as they were willing to go already and he turned it down...If he wanted to stay that badly he could have worked something out over the past few months. That tweet just seems like both sides being respectful. It even seemed like Brodie was trying to use the Flames a bit...not too many teams were handing out 5M contracts with term to Dmen
Top 5 goalie or Brodie...sorry pal
And Tanev might be a better fit anyway...I think some of you are just using your heart more than their heads
Brodie and Tanev have near identical stats from last season yet some people talk like we went from Bobby Orr to Chris Biotti. Also Tanev is a righty
^^ or it was just reality? The cost of one impacts the budget available to the other.
You may be right that prioritizing a #1 over Brodie will prove a bad strategy. Once they did though, sticking to that priority to get it done is a positive.

Right. Treliving didn’t pretend Brodie was a priority because, well, he wasn’t. Markstrom is going to make a bigger impact than Brodie or Tanev or Schmidt or Pietrangelo or Hall.

Or...Treliving spent some time negotiating with TJ’s agent over the last 2 weeks - month , culminating with the Flames’ absolute best offer to TJ.
With no decision from TJ at the start of the UFA period, Tre pursued their most important need,Markstrom, and got him signed.
How did that successful venture with Markstrom do anything to change his best offer to TJ?
Pretty simple. It didn’t.
